A lot of people think because 1 pokemon has a type advantage they think it will easily, but as we seen in the anime thats not 100% true, Pikachu has defeated a lot of ground types like Rhydon and Onyx, but it has lost to some like Sandshrew and Steelix, Misty's Starmie got beaten easily by a Graveler, A Typhlosion took a direct hit from a water gun like it was nothing, same with a Rhypherior who took a direct hit from an energy ball but because it had the solid rock ability it weakened it. Some pokemon can learn moves to cover their weaknesses, almost all water pokemon can learn ice or ground moves to cover their grass and electric weakness, fire types can learn grass moves to cover all 3 of their weaknesses.

Game wise its a little different, A pikachu holding a light ball would easily KO Gyarados with 1 hit unless it had a focus sash or quick claw and used Earthquake, and if Pikachu was facing a Rypherior and Pikachu is holding a light ball and knew grass knot the damage would be alot but Rypheriors solid rock reduces it but because Pikachu's light ball it increases Pikachus special attack and attack, and because Rypherior has crappy special defense it might be a KO unless it too had focus sash or quick claw and Rypherior doesn't have to use earthquake it has a really high attack stat that any physical move will KO Pikachu who has a crappy defense stat. Game wise stats matter and type advantage somewhat, anime wise stats and type advantages don't seem to matter.
