While working with NASADA, Trini hears about Mercer Industries' work with Dino DNA. The government has their eyes on them due to suspiscions on them trying to revive dinosaurs. Knowing the government would likely try to destroy the technology for their gain, she contacts her ranger friends, but is only able to reach the married couples of Jason and Kimberly and Tommy and Kat. Knowing Jason and Kim have a young baby at home she decides to ask Tommy to investigate into the situation, his son although young is old enough for him to leave them for sometime without risking their lives.

Tommy agrees and investigates Mercer Industries to find out their work is to splice dinosaur DNA with humans, though knowing they could attract attention they have done this on a remote location. Tommy decides to stop this but is confronted by the Tyrannodrones created by Mercer. Using his Zeo powers he is able to fight them off, but when he faces Mercer about the situation he realizes his been using Dino Gems to makes his creations. Tommy fights off Mercer and is able to take three of the four gems from him, but as he leaves, an enraged Mercer tries to force the fourth gem with the serum he created and causes a explosion that destroys the facility and kills most poeple in it, severely wounding Tommy in the process.

After escaping Tommy contacts Trini to inform on the Gems and asks for her help. Knowing the government would not hesitate to make of these gems the same Mercer did, Trini decides to send Tommy help in the form of Hayley Ziktor, a friend of her that helped during the creation of the Lightspeed powers but had defected from the project and left Mariner Bay seeking a more peacefull and rangerless life at Reefside, California. She helps Tommy recover and after his wounds are healed, they go to Reefside where her lab is located, under her Cybercafé. After much inspection they figure out the Dino Gems as Mercer called them can connect to the morphing grid and could potentially be used to create Ranger powers. Tommy decides it would be too much risk to create ranger powers since it would only attract problems.

Tommy decides to take the Dino Gems to Wes Collins, the Time Force Red Ranger, knowing he along with Eric Myers command the Silver Guardians and could protect them if needed. With his morpher damaged, he is unable to teleport so he has to move using conventional means, but given the nature of his load he decides to travel alone and not risk civillians being hurt if he is attacked. In the end this proves to be the best choice as he is attacked by Tyrannodrones just leaving the city, who are able to outmatch him and while he is able to morph again, this cause him a great pain and is only able to fend them off for a short while before decidnig to scatter the gems out of their reach before he is kidnapped.

Hayleylearns of Tommy's fate and takes out the morphers she had created without Tommy's consent and embarks on a search for the gems, knowing they are needed to power them up. She is surprised to find the gems were found by students of the local highschool and they were being attacked by tyrannodrones. She was able to lead them away from school and scape the tyrannodrones before explaining them what they were and why they were being attacked. She gives them the morphers and asks them for their help, to which none accept, but Ethan takes the morphers out of curiosity. Shortly after they are attacked again and after watching Ethan is able to transform into a ranger the other take the morphers as well to battle.

With the new Ranger team formed, Hayley asks them to rescue Tommy, to which they accept after some convincing. Eventually they are able to locate Tommy and free him, only to find Mesogog waiting for them as they scape. The rangers are able to fend off Mesogog long enough to escape. Now with a new ranger team formed, and feeling in debt to them after they saved him, Tommy decides to stay with them as their mentor and with Hayley's aid gets a job at their school as a not so good English teacher.

Tommy reaches to both Trini and Kat to inform of the situation and let them know his morpher was ruined. Trini asks him to send it over as she can reach to Billy to have it fixed and Kat says she understands, but their son is upset about it, he has been gone for months now.

Eventually they learn Mesogog was able to find them so easily because two more Dino Gems were located at Reedside. The team searches for them and are able to find the Crimson Gem, but soon after Mesogog's minions find the Black Gem. The rangers try to bargain with them, offering to deliver Tommy to Mesogog as he had made clear he wanted to kill the former Zeo ranger after what he did to his experiments. In reality the idea was to have Tommy steal the Black Gem and use it, but as the battle ensued, the Black Gem flew out of their reach and ended up near Devin and Cassidy who had been trying to cover all of the ranger's actions, being picked up by the former. The rangers prioritize taking them to safety only to find out the Gem had already bonded with Devin and would not react to Tommy even when trying to use the morpher Hayley created.

Knowing he would be targeted by Mesogog, the team has no other option but to explain Devin the situation and offer him the chance to become a Ranger, to which he rapidly agrees, but hates to leave Cassidy out of it. Eventually Cassidy notices Devin is more absent minded than usual and leaves her constantly, something he doesn't use to do much. She decides to follow him and eventually finds out about he and the others. Cassidy learns from Devin how the Dino Gems bond and steals the Crimson Gem which already had a morpher. When the rangers are called to action they are susprised to find a fifth ranger joining them, only to be mad to later found out it was Cassidy after stealing the Crimson Gem.

By the time Dino Killer appears, Tommy is away since Kat is close to delivery of their second child. Cassidy and Kira had a sort of rivalry being infatuated by Trent Mercer. But as rangers, they have no issue fighting Dino Killer together. When he steals Cassidy's Stegozord her hatred for the evil ranger grows so much she has to be stopped by Devin to not attack him on her own. When they figure out Trent is Dino Killer, using the White Gem Mesogog still had in his power, Cassidy tries to attack him in civilian form, Trent rapidly outmatches her, but is saved by Devin shortly followed by the rest of the team.

When Trent joins the rangers, Cassidy decides she still hates him and although she doesn't stop Stegozord from working with him, she doesn't join him in his Megazord but instead accompanies Devin on the Brachiozord.

After Trent joins the rangers, Mesogog uses the data he had on the Red, Blue and Yellow Dino Gems combined with the white Gem he had more time to work with and creates a clone of Dino Killer using the Yellow Gems data as base and combines the Red and Blue data with the White data to create two more Ranger Drones to help him. It is only after Trent protects Cassidy from the Dino Killer drone's final attack that she accepts him as a ranger partner and their relationship as a team grows enough for them to defeat the three ranger drones and their zords.

After Mesogog's defeat the rangers finish their school year without issue and move on with their lives, pursuing Conner a soccer career, Ethan, with Hayley's recommendation enters MIT, Kira a music career, Devin and Cassidy, now in a relationship decide to continue their news reporter career while Trent decides to take some time to take care of his father who got severely injured after Mesogog's defeat. Tommy decides to finally return home after being away for almost three years, only to be back to a broken relationship with his son.
