Something different for a change!
I bought this game recently on sale with certain doubts. It sure looked pretty from the screenshots and playthroughs, and I do love exploration games in nature like this. Moreover, I love snowy landscapes and I always wanted a survival game that would take advantage of the cold! And last but not least, it gave me serious Thira vibes I've never seen anywhere else. But would it be worth it? The game was known to be a hardcore survival, where playing isn't very... relaxing, and the playthroughs I watched seemed to get repetitive after a while. But I said meh, it looks nice and it's cheap, I'll try it at the very least.
Well I've never been more grateful for not letting a good deal slip away! BOY am I grateful!
The Long Dark surely isn't meant for everybody, it actually has many flaws. As I already mentioned, the game mechanics are quite simple and they don't offer any surprises once you get used to them. It soon turns to be not only the main, but the sole objective of the whole game. The only thing you'll be doing is trying to survive to the next morning, which means you'll be looking for food, water and warm place to stay overnight. Since walking in the cold snow is not really easy, you'll find out that traveling longer distances is lengthy, difficult and even dangerous. So much for proper pleasurable exploration, but to be fair, this is exactly what the game is about - the nature may be beautiful, but it still remains cruel and ruthless. It will take your breath away in many ways... sometimes literally, hah! But this is exactly what I love about the game. The sceneries are wonderful, the atmosphere of it is incredible, and... well I just love the coziness of being in warmed cottage while there's a snowstorm raging outside. I love this style of life, and this game has surprised me in how much it captures this feeling!
Another reason I love it so much is because it's precisely what I want Thira to be. If I ever had to pick a medium to represent what Thira is, this game is definitely what I'd choose. That's why I wanted to draw Käjthire in its style, and I have to say I kinda like how it looks.
