Description "The foeti! They were flying!"
---
I’ve been working on and off on this for over a month now. The reason I used so long on is because I re-painted it a billion times before I got it right, especially Hyssop. I could never get the colours or shadows right and a few days before the deadline it came to me; why not change the background? Entirely? So I changed the colour scheme from purple and pink to various hues of blue.

This piece is some kind of milestone for me. Not because of outstanding anatomy or composition (which I know kind of sucks) and not because of originality or exciting subject matter, but because I actually like this. I don’t know if it’s my style simply because I don’t have one, but I don’t get this foul taste in my mouth whenever I look at this.

So this was a trade with ~dimespin . She’s one of my favourite artists out there and I was thrilled when she asked me if I wanted to trade some art. Firstly, her style is just awesome; I can go through her gallery a million times and it’s still impossible for me to get tired of her art. Secondly, her ideas and characters are intriguing as hell. I got to choose one of her characters to draw and I’ve always (since I saw him for the first time anyway) wanted to draw a picture of Hyssop. He’s just one adorable, insane guy and I love his design.

In this picture he seems to be stuck in some kind of bizarre, melting blue world with bubbles aimlessly floating around in the air. For some reason foetuses of different species and sizes are trapped within some of these bubbles. Hyssop is currently studying a tiny little bubble with a long tailed creature in it, wondering what kind of animal that might turn out to be.

Time: 30+ hours
Medium: Photoshop 7.0

God, this looks so much better in “real life” (aka Photoshop)

wow, purple and orange love again! the background is stunning in this! kind of simple but really effective, especially because it looks like there're paint blobs dripping down. the way you chose to shade it really determines the atmosphere, too. everything looks so gorgeous and dreamlike
no wonder you're proud of this! :D

I must say, I am extremely fond of that hand, the one right one (His right) I love the shading on it and especially on the wrist. The bubbles are such delight, I want to try drawing bubbles again, and bubble moons. The babies inside them are darling too. I love the twirling sky as well. I love how you drew the tie, it looks good to chew on.

I think this is fantastic. It has so many warm tones but there's still something dark about it.

Like I said before, this is beautiful. It's so dream like, and quirky, and you've done a wonderful job capturing his character to a degree I didn't expect at all, clothes, wrinkles and all. The bubbles look so delicate, and I really enjoy the melting effect. I'm not sure how to really convey how much I love this. I'm so glad I didn't chicken out on asking you for a trade.

Also I need to say I love his tie. Does the shirt say, "time is relative"?

I'm touched by what you've said up there. I've loved your artwork for some time and I'm honored to think you like mine as well.

I'm very, very, very glad you like it. I was so worried when it came to capturing his character (while I still think it doesn't look hundred percent Hyssop-y I guess it's OK), since Hyssop and all your other creations have so much personality

Indeed it does, I don't know why, it just seemed fitting. I think I was originally going to have a space-and-time theme in this, but ended up with something a little more surreal instead

I wasn't kidding. I think I would have loved you art even if you drew stick figures on food-stained napkins. Have the feeling the personality and life still would have been there, which is a big part of why I love it so much. The way you render stuff in general is also quite unique and just so… you
