Description Will move to scrap later

Okay, so this wasn't exactly on my 2010 New Year's Resolution but it was one of the things that I did hope to develop.

One of the things I slowly realized over the years that back when I was in the crazy story-making and coming up with 'brand new' characters, I was actually using the same template for a lot of characters, most often the protagonists. This has bothered me for quite some time and so over the years I've been taking steps to do something about it.

Since I was having an art block of 'raaar this OC looks like that OC' negative thinking, I decided to just draw out everybody I thought looked like one another as best/different as I possibly can.

Getting out of the way that:
1) Age range is severely limited, like between the ages of 12-supposedly 30s
2) Still have limitations in facial characteristics (eg nose and face shape)

Do they all the look the same? 8| Am I doing okay so far in trying to differentiate them slowly but surely or I shouldn't be so darn attached to them and just try radically changing a couple of characters?

Hmmm... they do look a little similar... :\

But, in life there are always people who look alike. And sometimes it turns out to be an awesome plot device! (Ever read Tale of Two Cities?) Perhaps its hard to tell the differences because they're drawn so small. Have you ever tried a highly rendered portrait of your characters? Just a suggestion.

This is a great collection of faces! I think that making each of your characters distinct is a pretty good idea! You've done a good job with them. Many of the differences are subtle but clear.
Still, don't get caught up in too many details. Many of the similarities are caused by your personal style. If you wanted to make them realistically different, you might as well draw them in photo-realism. Also, the face is only a small part of who the characters are. Other factors are body shape, mannerisms, personalities, etc. So, try thinking of how their features will be used even while drawing them with a straight face.
Another thing I noticed is that the arrangement of their eyes in relation to their noses and mouths can be adjusted further, if you want. Some people have closer eyes than others.
One fun exercise is drawing your characters as caricatures (sort of having fun with their features). Make them look as goofy as possible. Sometimes, that helps me focus on first impressions and general presence rather than the tedious details.
Anyway, sorry for the long comment. These are wonderful character portraits!

I think that before designing the face, you may try to design first the whole silouette. Even if your charatcers look like each other, two different silhouette will give them very different temperament (think about luigi and mario, for exemple). It's very important to be able to recognise a charatcer by his shadow.
Then, for the face, try to draw your characters without their hair, that's a very good test to see if they look like each other too much !

I love Tellou the most, because he's got some important element in his silouette, clothing and facial expression that make his directly identifiable (little round glasses, earing, chin , proud and tall posture). We, readers, already know :" OK, this is a cool character"

Eyes shape are also very important, because this is where the "soul" of your charatcer belongs. The guy with the glasses and the goaty has a very interesting gaze !

Silhouette and no-hair test: Cool. I should try that someday!

Tellou thanks you for the fine complements.

And thanks for the helpful insights.

Try playing around with the cheek and chin shapes. 8)

I donΒ΄t really notice that much similarities between them though. c:

Chin-wise I try to make differences, but I haven't thought about the cheek area yet, thanks! 83

I think you've done a decent job, they all look different to me. Seems like everyone has a different nose and face shape combination, I'm a fan. I wish I could do this as well, actually. XD Nice job!

they all look good to me, try adding more facial features like scars, hair, tattoos, piercing, ect. The more accessories you have the better and orginal look you will achieve. Also eye, nose, and lip shape will play parts too. Its actually the more subile things that make a difference.

I agree; and I completely forgot about tinkering around with the lip shapes. Thanks for the reminder 8D
