Well. I persevered today, and I've totally finished Link.
In total this is about 10 hours work, but it was really fun doing it.
For my second attempt at shading using the airbrush in Photoshop, I think this has come out a lot better than my Mario one did.
Pencil and paper lineart from a big reference picture in a book. Scanned into Photoshop and shaded in there.

And advice... Uhhh...
What I tend to do is choose a base colour and colour a section in that flat colour. His tunic for example was a flat green. Then I open that colour in the colour mixer thing in PS and make it darker to do the shadows, and then finally I use white to do the highlights.
Whenever I'm doing a base colour I use hardness at 100% and 100% flow, but when I do shading I usually drop to 0% hardness and around 1-10% flow with airbrush mode turned on. It takes a while, but it looks good in the end!
