 Malkino

     Malkino woke up.

"You are one of the 7..." the words echoed in his head. But why did he dream of that? Why would Burt have come and visited him, the youngest Trainie is the Earth Clan?

"Stupid dream.." Malkino muttered bitterly. "Making me think that I'm actually worth something..."

The ground started to shake around him, and Malkino had to remind himself to calm down. 'We don't want a mudslide again, like the one that killed Ma.'

Malkino saddened. He hated to think about what happened to Ma.

'That was the past, and the present is now.' he thought. He walked out of the den, into the warm sun, and stretched.

But Malkino couldn't yet shake the feeling that the dream was meant for HIM, Malkino, the youngest Trainie of the Earth Tribe, and that is was something so much more than a dream...

Malkino shook his head. 'If the thought won't go away,' He thought, 'Then I'll see if hunting will make it go away.'

"Denno, Jallio!" Malkino called to his brothers. "Want to go hunting?"

"Sure," Denno said, padding up to Malkino.

"Yuppo," Jallio said, joining his brothers.

Malkino led the way out of the camp, and toward the plains. "

"You and Jallio hunt together," Malkino told Denno. "We'll meet up here in 10 minutes."

"Ok." Denno ran off to the west, with Jallio following.

'Finally,' Malkino thought, 'a whiff of some prey!'

Ten minutes and 2 rabbits later, Malkino met up with his brothers.

"Great catch, Malkino!" Jallio called out as he saw Malkino come running up with the two rabbits hanging from his mouth.

"Thanks," Malkino replied. "We should get back to the camp before the fresh kill isn't so fresh."

Malkino and his brothers got back to camp, and dumped their fresh kill on the pile.

"Wow, Malkino. What a great catch!" Setrea said, purring. Then she started humming, "Ennie, meeni, mineie, moe. Catch a she-cat by the toe-"

Malkino thanked her before she  could finish her song.

Denno came up to him. "Wow, Setrea's really taken a liking to you, hmm?"

"Shush," Malkino told his brother, blushing. "It's nothing."

"Why do you get all worked up about Setrea liking you? It's not a crime to have a crush, and it's not such a bad thing to have the prettiest trainie in the Earth Tribe like you."
Malkino sighed. "I know, but, I just don't like her like she likes me. I mean, she's a great friend, but I just don't want more than that. But I don't know how to break it to her."

Denno rested his tail on Malkino's shoulder. "You'll find a way. Meanwhile, let's share one of your rabbits!"

"Ok," Malkino replied, trotting up to the fresh kill pile. Before he took a bite, he thanked Burt for this prey.

'Burt,' he prayed. 'Please let me know - was it just a dream?' Malkino looked up, hoping for an answer, but saw nothing but shining stars.

Malkino sighed, and pushed the rabbit toward Denno. "I'm not hungry. I'm going to bed."

    "Ok," Denno replied. "You sure?"

Malkino didn't even respond, just went into the den and went to sleep.

Malkino woke up to a whisper in the wind. He looked around. No one else was awake. 'How strange,' he thought.

Then Malkino heard the whisper again, stronger this time.

"You are one of the 7..." the voice whispered.

    "Burt?" Malkino whispered.

The wind didn't reply, just whispered once again, "You are one of the 7..."

Malkino laid down again, the words echoing in his head. 'I'm one of the 7... I'm one of the 7...'
