Description Illustration of Mexica merchants drinking and feasting. Based on a drawing and text from Florentine Codex.

The time of the day sign Four Wind - "....But the merchants, those known as distinguished traders and vanguard merchants, who were rich, greatly esteemed and honored this [day sign]."

"And when it grew dark, there was drinking. All of the old merchant men and women assembled. When they became drunk, then they vaunted, boasted, and blustered over their wealth, their achievements, their valor, and especially wheresoever they had set foot; that is to say, wheresover they had gone to arrive; the things which they had discovered, the manner of their return, their coming back...
...So there they made light of, scoffed at, exposed, revealed, abused and tortured those who knew no places, who had gone nowhere, who nowhere in any degree had set foot anywhere..."

Note: The text mentioned old merchants, but the drawing shows young merchants, which I went with for the drawing.

Drawn with copic markers.

Pulque or octli as it is known in Nahuatl. It comes from the maguey sap that is fermented. They used it to get celebrate as enough of that will get you intoxicated. In some places in Mexico it is still sold today.

Thank you, these types of bowls were common in the Aztec's time period.
