Description This is the twelfth design in my Postclassic Yucatan Male fashion set. This man wears a jacket. He is from the provinces of Chikinchel, Tazes, Cochua or Copules. These were all located on the northeastern edge of the Yucatan peninsula. The lords from this region were said to wear sleeveless ‘jackets’. It was very much like a vest. These jackets were fastened in the front like our contemporary jackets. This garment seems to restricted to people of very high status. The descriptions of these provinces are based on ones reported by the Spaniards in the Relaciones Geograficas. Jackets were illustrated in the Codex Madrid. However, they are shown being displayed rather than worn. They were usually multi-colored, using thread dyes or feathers that Maya sewed onto the garment. I’m not sure what they would have called this, but among the Nahua groups of central Mexico jackets were known as xicolli.
