I remember coming across a male lunaΒ moth with a shredded wing. It seems like the poor things have to go through this a lot. Beautiful female, by the way.

Thank you. Unfortunately, such is often the lot of larger insects. They are beautiful to us, but to many others, they're little more than a potential meal.

How do you manage to hold this creature without scarying it? Β It looks so calmed. (forgive my english if that's not the correct form to ask).

(It's alright) This particular kind of insect, known as a luna moth, only lives for a short time in its adult form, on account of not having mouth parts. The one I photographed was probably dying, to say the least, and it had also been attacked by a bird, rendering its wings useless at the time. Otherwise, if it had been able to fly, I'm pretty sure it would have done so.

I was not aware such a creature existed on Earth, very interesting. It reminds me Vibrava, that one Pokemon.

They don't live for very long, when they reach their adult stage, due to not having any mouthparts. Their size, too, probably makes them quite a target for birds and bats alike.

^^ It's a shame they live such short lives, though...Only about a week, I think. :s

I've only see them a couple other times...This was the only time I've been able to get a picture. I'm not sure of their range.

How did you catch this Luna Moth?

I found it stranded on a potted plant behind my house. Something had attacked it, and shredded its wings.
