The air was thick and the bark nearly burnt his paws. Rusty frantically looked for a clear place to leap, while the kit in his jaws screamed and flailed.

“Keep still, rat,” He thought, “and your mouth shut, you’ll choke on the damn smoke..”

Midway through his thoughts, he saw a not-yet roasted tree, a fair length’s away. Rusty scrunched up his backside muscles, and, bouncing off his powerful hind legs, made the flying jump to the lower tree, hooking his claws in the bark.

“We’re gonna live through this, scrap.” He thought to the little kit.
