(No offense to the artist or art at all) but why does everyone think Springtrap is Purple Guy? Thr Purple Guy tried to hide in the dilapidated suit of Springtrap when the spirits of the children he murdered went after him and he died. His dead body is still inside Sprintrap-just look up the boot screenshots.

Think about it this way, alright: Purple Guy (actual name unknown, though Vincent is popular these days.) kills the kids and stuffs them in the suits (FNAF 1 crew), thanks to Marionette, they possess the suits.
I doubt the kids got any clue on controlling ghostly powers n such, so we'll presume they're letting of a small aura of ghostly power under normal conditions... Fast forward a couple months (assumption here) Purple Guy returns, and forcefully dismantles the animatronics, releasing the souls from their shells.
Now, I doubt these kids are just gonna let him get away with effectively offing them TWICE, so they chase him into the room Spring Bonnie is kept in. They pen him in the room, and PG hops in the springlock suit... To anyone who's done any level of digging, this would be a monumentally Bad Idea, as they mention in some of the old tapes in FNAF 3 that the suit locks were prone to failure if you so much as farted too hard... given these kids are no longer in their shells, I'ma go on a limb and say their Ghost Aura (TM) is spread further than normal... the locks fail, PG gets' suited the messy way, and the collective aura emission of the kids traps him in his own spring-lock suited corpse... Thus the PG-possessed Springtrap is formed.
As he's got both his own body AND Spring Bonnie in the same form, PG can move around smoother in comparison, but the programming inherent to the suit means that if he hears something even remotely similar to a child, the suit forces him to move to the assumed location.

I'll be honest, I had always wondered similar to your initial comment, so I broke out the Google-Fu and a couple excavators and went digging.
Five wikis and a little assumption (regarding ghostly auras in this scenario) later, we have the most likely net result. Needless to say, while ol' Springtrap makes the Top 10 Freakiest Encounters Ever, in my own opinion... he's nowhere in the Top 500 Most Liked Character List that I happen to keep. Being a zombified child killer kinda killed his odds there.

That's what the Google-Fu lead me to. Then I spent the better part of eight hours digging around, mainly because the rampant ads kept bogging things down and I kept having to re-open pages in new tabs and killing the prior tabs so I could do my research-work.
