Hello!

Overall, you've done a good job depicting a festive feel and interesting characters. Is there any kind of story of the relation between the two?

There are a couple of things that are slightly off (and I'm trying to give you comments that others haven't already, so I might seem a little nitpicky ). The shape of the guy's body is kind of awkward. His bottom half is in a comfy enough leaning position, but his upper half is pushed forward and very stiff. Near where his back and abdomen are, there should be more of a curve leaning into the wolf, and more of his right hand covered in the fur at the wolf's head.

The shading on his face and hair looks different from the shading on the rest of the picture - did you use a base or any other resource? I've noticed that a lot of bases and doll makers have very sharp "pencil tool" type shading and pointy features. The guy in your icon has a squarer jaw and chin and larger nose - see if you can bring those features here. And if you did use a base, make sure to credit in your artist's comments - most base makers and doll makers do require a link back to the original. (:

The wolf's back is low. I'm not entirely sure how else to describe it, but it's head is large and to realistically connect to its body, the body must be a bit larger, and what of the back can be seen needs to be higher up (nearer to the level of the boy's inside crook of his elbow). So a quarter inch (like a bit more than a centimeter) or so higher.

Otherwise, though, fantastic job on this! (:

Wow, I love the warm feeling of this piece It reminds me of family and friends for that reason by just looking at the tree and the boy.
The boy and the wolf are drawn very well. Along with the background, I think there is a lot to be said about these characters.

Great job I'm sure your friend was really surprised at how much work was done for this.

I'm sure whosever this was, they were delighted with it. It's got several well-drawn elements that are each individually very good but combined make a piece that has real character.

One of the things I find most interesting about gifts and art trades is how you came to choose what you did for the person. Is it a character of theirs? Do they love wolves? Why did you choose this particular scene? I realise that you didn't include this at the time because it was meant to be a secret but a year on it would be quite interesting for us to read.

On to the technical... I think the main character is drawn pretty well. The stomach is good and I like the folds in the scarf as it wraps around his middle. The face all seems good as far as I can tell (shame not to be able to enlarge it) and I really like what you've done with the hair - all the different shades. Of course, whenever you draw a guy with long hair (especially if the hair is going to be layered like you've drawn it here) you have to be careful that people realise it's actually a guy that you're drawing and I think for the most part you have done this well - the hips, legs, stomach all look pretty guy-like. The face, however, is a bit on the effeminate side; the pointy chin is a dead giveaway. People tend to associate "heart-shaped" faces with girls so you might want to consider making a squarer jaw. You could also consider very slight adjustments to the shoulders (broader) and arms (more shapely). Again, it doesn't have to be much - you can have skinny guys, but a few little touches here and there might help. Even on the skinniest of guys you can see the definition of muscle on the arms, it's just small muscles. Also if he's going to have a six opack it would be more consistent to have SOME muscles on the arms!

Okay, onto the wolf. I like the way you've drawn the fur, particularly on the hind legs and tail. Those longer strands just look awesome. And the definition on the front legs too - you've obviously paid attention to exactly where the wolves have fur and what lengths and so on, and it shows. The one thing I would say here is that the head does look a bit "pouffy" - there's quite a lot of "fluff" on the right (as we look at it) side of the head. I was of the impression that wolves' manes were of longer fur than this so that could be what's contribution to the fluff-factor - but I haven't looked into it in any great detail so I could be wrong about this. The muzzle and snout are all in proportion and it's a very convincing portrait of a wolf. The size, of course, is quite different from real-life wolf proportions, which is one of the reasons I was curious about finding out some more background to this picture. It works quite well with the person being able to lean against the wolf and bury himself in its long fluffy fur, but I was just wondering what your reasons were

I really like the tree on the left with the Christmassy-looking lights/baubles hanging from it. It adds a really festive feel to the whole image (as does the red of the scarf btw) which I think is nicely fitting for a secret Santa gift. Just watch the shading. I can see that for the image as a whole the light is coming from the left but since those ball things are glowing they should be casting light on the branches next to them, which they are not all doing (note the lowest one on the left of the tree, and the branch next to it).

There also seems to be some snow falling on the left of the picture but not on the right? That's a bit confusing, was it an accident?

I like the background as a whole and the way it looks almost like a painting - it enhances the rest of the picture, but doesn't take attention away from it. The shadows on the snow are done well but what about round the characters' feet? The boy's shoes could have more of a shadow, I think, and the scarf. At the moment it looks a bit like they're floating above the snow.

But speaking of shadows, nice work on using blue tones. It really looks like a winter's day - the way the light falls in winter. I have seen people before too afraid to use blue and they use grey - or worse, yellow! But you've got some nice colours in here.

Wow, I've just realised how much I've written. That comment never meant to get that long - you must have a very interesting picture that I managed to write so much! I'm a bit worried now that you don't have critique enabled and you didn't want anyone to write this level of comments on your piece. I hope it's okay and I didn't just waste a bunch of time

Nice work, anyway. I hope the person you made it for liked it
