Ash could get his Dragonite stronger eventually. But then again, Iris' had the head start, and I doubt she'd be getting lazy in training her Dragon types any time soon.

But the point still stands, Iris' Dragonite is stronger. And if anything, the fact that Ash's Dragonite will listen to him immediately robs Ash of any challenge that he could overcome by actually improving his trainer skills.

True. Charizard listens to him now and is a strong ally, and the same is true of Iris and Dragonite. So in the long run, Iris not having a Dragonite who listened to her from the start was VALUABLE to her growth as a Dragon Master.
