very charming! I like the warm tones, and different textures you have used. The contrast gives it such a dynamic feeling for something so simple as pears! May I ask what board you use? I've been trying to paint on MDF board, and I find it almost impossible to blend, as each successive paint layer picks up the underlayers.

Thanks

Yeah, it's canvas on board, like this:

There are several companies that do them - Winsor& Newton, Loxley, etc.

To blend with acrylics you have to be superfast while it's still wet, or use a medium to extend drying time. You can get a kind of blending by applying washes though. I expect if you are painting on MDF a healthy covering of gesso might be required, although I've never done it so I can't say for sure

Oh, yes I'm used to using canvas board - I prefer that over stretched canvas. MDF has no texture, its such a pain to work with, and unfortunately its the glazing that is causing the problems - I have to leave it to ompletely dry for about 2 days before reapplying another colour! Its horrible! I really should have coated it as you suggested. But alas, no money! I suppose it serves me right for trying to be cheap!
THanks for the advice!

Wow. I never heard of conditions where acrylic takes two days to settle. That board must have a very slick surface!

yeah! Well it dries, but the wood is damp, and if I glaze, the water picks it up. Very frustrating! Im stupid though, because I've done other pieces on MDF (even with built up paint) and the same thing has happened, I should have learnt from my mistakes! Oh well

Beautiful! I love the little details in this piece, like the tiny highlights on the stems and the speckled texture on the skin. For a crit, the cast shadow looks like an opaque black shade even though the table is a medium value and the pears should be reflecting light back onto the table's surface. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the crit (very welcome and thanks for taking the time). I noticed I took the shadows way too dark and monotone, but I was afraid it would make things worse trying to fix it

Yeah, that's one really nice aspect of digital painting; you can always go back to a previous version if you keep your wips backed up. If you're not planning to sell or show this painting, it could be an educational exercise to try and improve it since you already have a photo of the current version. But what's really important is that you're aware of it so you can improve in that area in your future work, so it doesn't really matter

I agree completely. I tend to try to learn in the following works rather than correct things in older works. Firstly because I would be reworking everything all the time. Secondly, because it stands as a reminder not to do it again(!). And lastly because I kind of like to look back over progress made. It would be worthwhile possibly to try to lighten that area because no doubt I will need that skill at some point in any case. Or at least it would be a useful one to have.

Thanks again for your comments
