Inspired by the Great Black Cormorant.This illustration started off as more of an experimental piece which I decided to work into a bit more.

The original working title for this piece was actually 'Melancholy', so the idea for this drawing did start off being a piece with a sad kindof background/atmosphere. The more I worked into it, the more it did become something a bit more mysterious than sad like you say, but it still has the hint of that atmosphere.

Gosh, I love that you not only get that sense of the iridescent feathers on the bird, but also the gold coming from the lighting. Wow. Wonderfully executed!
Also love that gradient from dark to light across the image...and the eerie antlers (I think?) that seem to be peeking through that surface. Spooky. But awesome.

Thank you, I tried to use more softer tones in this to try create a certain atmosphere, so I'm glad it worked!
And yep those are antlers!
I do love painting antlers, so any excuse to put them in a drawing xD
