The written three Japanese Kanji letters are as same as Chinese traditional Han-zi letters, although those three-letters-in-one-set identify a particular kind of Japanese Maple (Acer, Momiji,紅葉, Kaede, 槭,槭樹,楓, Feng-Shu, 楓樹,Qi--Mu, 槭木) and specially pronounce them as "Oh-Momiji" in Japanese languages ....
Literally the meaning of "Oh" as "big or large", and "Momiji" as "crimson fall autumn-tints" in Japanese languages, we have another pronunciation for exactly same two letters of "Momiji" reading as "Kou-Yo(紅葉)" means straightly "autumnal leaf tinged-with-red, however, the OhMomiji trees have another highlight as "Kou-You(黄葉)means straightly "autumnal leaf tinged-with-yellow, and of course they have other colorful leafy seasons too ... i.e. they have Katsu-You(褐葉) season too ...
Literally the meaning of "Kou-Yo(紅葉)" indicates straightly "autumnal leaf tinged-with-RED, and "Kou-You(黄葉)indicates straightly "autumnal leaf tinged-with-YELLOW. The written Kanji letter-combinations are different, the former combination is written as RED+LEAF but the latter one is written as YELLOW+LEAF, the pronunciations are exactly same in Japanese languages though ...
Note, to avoid the confusion, most people express YELLOW+LEAF combination as using "Ou-You" instead of "Kou-You" sometimes, or further more going to explain using both sounds to make it sure of YELLOW sets ...
It is more clear if you pronounce those letter sets in Han-Chinese languages .... i.e. Hong-Ye(紅葉) and Huang-Ye(黄葉) in Mandarin ...
For more info. .... Literally the meaning of Katsu-You(褐葉) indicates roughly "autumnal leaf tinged-with-bark, bister, bistre, bronze or maybe Vandyke-brown colors ....
