Description Antwerp, September 2nd 2017

A retired left-hand drive Bedford TK beer truck stands on the parking of a brewery.

----------

The Bedford TK was a light commercial truck produced by Bedford of England between 1959 and 1986.  Replacing the Bedford S (1950-1959), the Bedford TK was built both with inline four and inline six petrol and diesel engines, and a separate military series was built as the Bedford MK (mixed-fuel, four-wheel drive) and MJ (diesel, four-wheel drive) between 1968 and 1992.  It was eventually superceded by the Bedford TL, production of which began in 1980.

----------

It's odd to think how, as a child, the presence of certain vehicles can leave a lasting impression.  For me, growing up in a small Belgian village south of the city of Antwerp, there were a number of cars and trucks which always seemed to be present, and the sight of which suffices to conjure memories of times now long past.  The white pair of Ford Taunus 17M parked in the garden of the neighbour. The green Opel Kadett C 'Limousine' used by the elderly neighbour two doors down. The rusted Citroën Dyane which stood wrecked and abandoned in the overgrown vacant plot of land further up in the street.  The beige Barkas B1000 that always stood at the end of the street. The red Opel Kadett D used by one of the teachers of the municipal school.  The red Panhard 21 parked on the road to the next village.  The Renault Master of the local police station.  The Renault 4L of the local post office.

And the Green Bedford TK of the beer trader from the main street, a familiar sight in the village and street, the beer merchant loading and unloading crates of bottles and barrels of beer, no matter the weather.

When I recently visited the village where I spent much of my youth, I noticed that the building where the beer trader used to be was being rebuilt for use as a shop and a set of flats.  Seeing how the old building's facade was being ruined remodelled, it left me wondering what had ever happened to the trader's old Bedford truck.

Quite serendipitous, while out on a bike ride into the Antwerp harbour on Saturday, I suddenly spotted an abandoned Bedford TK from the corner of my eye, parked up in the parking lot of a local brewery.  Imagine my astonishment when I recognised the actual beer truck from my village, the vehicle about which I had been wondering not even a month earlier...!  From what I have gathered, it will be preserved as part of the visitors' center of the local brewery, which is currently being set up in an old building in the harbour.

Thank you! ^_^

Yes, it's funny that I had been contemplating its fate only weeks before - so I was rather thrilled to see it, and glad it appears to have found a good home...

Looks in pretty good shape for its age.  I guess the current euro norms for truck engines would make it difficult to keep it on the road.

Oh, that, and the fact that an emission zone was put into place this year, effectively banning pre-Euro-norm (AND early Euro-norm) trucks...

Not necessarily; in several countries it would now be classified as a historic vehicle and only expected to conform with the emissions laws applying when it was built (that is none).

Didn't notice this comment until now.

No, actually under the new low emissions zone that was implemented in the city last year, she is banned from driving within the city center as a non-compliant vehicle; however an exception can be made if she pays a full congestion charge of €360 a year.

It's a charge mostly designed to convince owners of non-compliant vehicles to purchase emissions-compliant vehicles - the emission rules are revised every five years, effectively moving the cut-off date by five years for petrol-fueled and more for diesel-fueled vehicles; however owners of historic vehicles have no other choice than to pay the full charge if they want to drive their car in the city center.  Exceptions are in place for vehicles that are rarely driven - they can apply for a one-day only pass, with a maximum of six such passes a year.

Awesome bit of history! A very nice picture of the truck too... over here, all the vehicles are left-hand drive

Lol, true - but most Bedford TK's were built as right-hand drive vehicles...!!

Yes, as are almost all of the Vehicles in England, and quite a few in Europe as well It's the French (under Napoleon, I believe) who introduced Right-Hand driving as a national law... and the USofA has been their allies for so long, we simply followed suit.

It looks NEAT!  Reminds me of some trucks I saw in old movies like "Cuore di mamma" from 1969, and of episodes of the original Mission Impossible TV series, from the episodes where they tried to make it look like the team was in Europe!

Yes, that often happened - it actually reminds me of the M47 Pattons portraying "German Kingtiger tanks" in the Battle of the Bulge movie... >.>

I think I last saw her running a decade ago - but then again, that is a decade ago already.  I'm not sure if she's still a runner (I presume she still is - I never knew this TK as a pristine truck, she was always looking a bit scruffy), but I think she'll only be a static display in the brewery's visitors' center.

I'm just glade that she does at lest start ,but I think she's best left alone so that way people don't try and drive off in her . also she was a part of the brewing history of your country
