Description Microsoft Train Simulator v1.4

Narrow gauge steam engine 99 7234-0 of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen halts at the Schierke station on its way from the Brocken mountain top railway station to Wernigerode.

The Schierke railway station was opened in 1898, and has been in continuous use ever since, even though journeys were severely restricted and subject to numerous limitations between 1961 and 1989, due to its location in East Germany, and its proximity to the West-German border.  It is one of the only stations in Germany which is only served by steam-hauled scheduled trains, even to this day.

More about the HSB can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harz_Nar…

Which one of the two - the first attempt in 2003 (cancelled 2004), or the second of 2007 (cancelled 2009)?  MSTS2 definitely didn't fare well under Microsoft.  But then again, the same could be said for Flight Simulator - even though Microsoft brought FSX and the ill-fated Flight, I never upgraded from FS9 which in my eyes was much more versatile.
(Unfortunately, all of those files were on the same disk as my MSTS game files.  My HD crash robbed me of some 10 years of customising and fine-tuning...)

In a way, though, there eventually was a Train Simulator 2 - the original MSTS was developped by Kuju Entertainment, and after ACES was shut down by Microsoft, Kuju went on to make Rail Simulator and its successor series, the Rail Works/Train Simulator series.

Railworks is what MSTS2-II could have been, if Microsoft hadn't pulled the plug on it.  It was mostly made by the same people who had worked on both the original MSTS and the abandoned MSTS2 games...

I have been to Wernigerode in 1995. Almost exactly 20 years ago. The idea was to take a train to Brocken, but our daughter was too little then and my wife wasn't in the mood to board that steam-heated train In general, she doesn't like anything really old or retro-styled. So, we just enjoyed walking down the streets of Wernigerode and visited the castle.
