Description TrainWorld Museum, Schaarbeek, Belgium; October 2nd 2015

Type 12 "Streamliner" locomotive of 1939, one of just 6 built by Cockerill of Seraing, Belgium.  Designed by engineer M. Raoul Notesse, she was built as an express locomotive for use on the Brussels-Bruges-Ostend line.

On June 12th 1939, one of the Type 12s caught the Blue Ribbon when she hauled an express train on the Brussels - Bruges line at an average speed of 120.6 kph (74.9 mph), with peak speeds of 165 kph (102.5 mph).

The last regular service with the Type 12 took place on September 27th 1962 on the Brussels-Lille (France) line.  Of the six locomotives, only 12.004 was preserved.  She was restored to running condition on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Belgian Railways in 1985, after which she was run on special heritage services.  However, in 2006 she sustained irreparable damage and was withdrawn from service.  Restored cosmetically, she is now on display at the new TrainWorld museum in the Schaarbeek station near Brussels.

Sadly she won't, her boiler is cracked, and she's been bricked into the museum.

Oh, that’s a shame. It would be wonderful if she could.

Even if she were still capable of moving under her own power, she still wouldn't be allowed out on the rails as she lacks the ETCS automatic train protection system that is a legal requirement for every train out on the mainlines.

They caught her just in time to prevent catastrophic damage, but her boiler had cracked and was leaking... :/

I so hope you saw it running.  What was the damage?  Is it TRULY irreparable?  It is a magnificent machine.

kanyiko In reply to MensjeDeZeemeermin [2016-02-05 13:37:02 +0000 UTC]

Let's just say that estimates state, that it would almost cost less to build an entirely new one than to repair the damage on this one.

That, added to the fact that the railways have been in a cost-cutting exercise for a while now (with associated job losses) - people wouldn't quite understand them putting money in restoring a single locomotive rather than in saving jobs and improving service... :/

Once CRC machining and Computer-aided Casting become common place and functional, we may well see the rebirth of forgotten Titans.

Oh these were immaculate locomotives! A terrible shame that the engine can no longer run. Have you also seen the Belgian type 10? That's my favorite engine in that country. 4-cylinder Pacific

The Type 10 is also on display at the station - unfortunately it's a bit hemmed in, so taking pictures of her is a bit complicated.

kanyiko In reply to JSH50 [2015-10-02 19:19:05 +0000 UTC]

That's alright - no need to hide it.

My impressions... well, it's a bit mixed.  On the one hand, it is a nice museum, plenty of displays and exhibits... but I have some mixed feelings.  My main gripe is, that it uses only part of what was available in terms of trains, and that the way it has been constructed, virtually none of the trains can be removed from the museum without extensive... 'alterations' to the building (they actually built the museum around the five steam engines in Hall 1; the equipment in Halls 2, 3 & 4 can be moved out, but not without removing inner walls which separates the halls - although it appears to be a plasterboard one, so they might have anticipated future developments there.

Another thing which amazes me a bit is, that the museum appears to have been built without any provisions for future extensions.  It is hemmed in by an active shunting yard on the one end (used to turn passenger trains on the Schaarbeek - Namur - Dinant service), and by a logistics building on the other side, which leaves no space at all for extensions to the building.

It's also been 'designed' as a 'total immersion experience' - i.e. a bit noisy at times, and not especially ideal for photography.  A friend of mine visited the museum last week and had severe problems getting good pictures in the rather dark halls.  I had exactly the opposite - reasonably good pictures in the dark halls, but glare and reflection issues with display cases and in some of the lighter halls. x_x

Thank you my friend!

It seems short sighted to build the exhibits in, Not so much as to take them out but more for adding to the collection.

Here at the NRM (National railway museum) I wish the exhibits were isolated from the national network because you never quite know whats going to be there when you visit!,  I see it as a Museum and not a lucky dip as to what will be there!

Yes here too photography is very difficult due to light and display cases!  If ever you can get over here I would love to show you around!

The TrainWorld museum is a brand-new one, built from scratch.  Groundwork started in 2013, and it opened last week on Friday (September 25th).

Actually, the new museum is a brand-new building which was built next to the Schaarbeek station - the actual station building is part of the museum, albeit a separate part of it (there are a number of exhibits on display in the old ticket hall of the station, the trains are on display in the new part).

The old Diesel depot is nowadays used by the TSP-PFT preservation society as a depot and repair/restoration facility
