TITLE : The Action of the Indonesian National Army to foiled the PRRI/Permesta plot Made the American Military defeated. Here's the Story Behind It!

TRIBUNBATAM.ID-From 1958 to 1961 the Indonesian government was confused with various matters threatening state sovereignty both from within and outside the country.

The business of seizing West Irian from the hands of the Dutch 'Company' had not yet been completed, the republic also had to face a quite serious rebellion from the Universal People's Struggle and the Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia (Permesta & PRRI).

Quite serious because this large-scale uprising centered on the islands of Sulawesi and Sumatra.
Even more worrying is that Permesta and PRRI are supported by the United States CIA through their covert operations in Indonesia.
The central government then saw the need for military action to crush Permesta and PRRI.

So in March 1958 the Indonesian National Army or The TNI staged a large-scale military operation to overthrow the forces of Permesta and PRRI which had a strong base in West Sumatra and North Sumatra.
The military operation was named OperationTegas.
The target in this Firm operation was to seize and control Riau.

Riau was chosen as the target of the operation because Riau's position is quite strategic because it borders international sea traffic lanes.
Controlling Riau would also close the possibility of rebels escaping through the Malacca Straits.
In addition, in Riau there is also the Caltex oil company owned by the United States.

the Indonesian National Army or The TNI  involves all elements, both land, sea and air, and even the National Police are involved for the success of this military operation.

Before the operation had even started, the US Ambassador to Indonesia at the time, Howard Jones, together with several Caltex officials, headed to Jakarta to meet Prime Minister DJuanda Kartajaya.

Howard and Caltex officials intend to tell Juanda that many US citizens and investments are in Riau.

He was worried that if the operation Tegas was launched it would endanger the lives of US citizens and their investments there.

Furthermore, Howard also conveyed a bitter threatening signal that the US Navy based in the Pacific (Seventh Fleet), British military units in Singapore and US Marines would be on alert in Riau waters.

They will invade Riau to protect US investments and citizens if the Indonesian military is unable to control the situation during a decisive operation.

Juanda's reaction to this is not yet clear, but one thing is certain.

Early in the morning of 12 March 1958 the TNI launched Operation Decisive.

All the Indonesian National Army or The TNI's best defense equipment has been deployed, such as P-51 Mustang fighters, B-25 Mitchell bombers and others.

Not to forget the elite Indonesian National Army or The TNI troops such as Kopassus, Paskhas and Marines who also participated in this operation.

Meanwhile, the operations commanders were Lieutenant Colonel (Armed Forces) Kaharudin Nasution, Deputy I Lieutenant Colonel (Air Force) Wiriadinata, and Deputy II Major (Navy) Indra Subagyo.

The Indonesian military's sudden attack succeeded in disorganizing Permesta(Mostly are Aid because Permesta main Base in Sulawesi Islannd) and PRRI's defenses, many rebel members surrendered before putting up a fight.

The operation was successful, the uprising was quelled.

After checking, it turned out that there were a lot of sophisticated weapons such as the Garand, Springfield, M18 Recoilless gun and m20 Super Bazooka rifles in gress condition alias new made in America which were used by the PRRI rebels.

This further shows that America through its CIA also supports Permesta and PRRI.

In fact, Operation Firm was also a response from the Indonesian government, which knew that the United States was behind the scenes supporting the Permesta/PRRI rebellion.

This is because in May 1958, before Operation Tegas was carried out by a CIA mercenary pilot named Allen Lawrence Pope, his B-26 Invader bomber was shot down after previously carrying out various attacks on Indonesian military units in Donggala, Ambon, Balikpapan and Ternate.

Allen Pope was still alive when his plane was shot down, he was later arrested by the Indonesian authorities. (*)
