Description Here's the journal design, guys!

Included in the zip file are written instructions as well as some basic instructions as an image - hopefully the combination of the two makes things easy to explain.

This design was alot of fun to make. And when I decided that I was going to put this up for everyone to use, it put an even bigger smile on my face.

If you choose to use this journal, send me a link - the aim of this at its simplest level is to feature people. But it can be expanded to be so much more if you want it to be!

I cannot wait to see how you guys use this.

If you're unsure of what you could do, have a look here [link]

Technical Notes:
  • I'm not 100% sure where this texture came from, but I think it was from dA somewhere - it's something I'm going to have to check

  • The font used is called "Hand of Sean" and can be found at dafont.com

  • Everything else has been created by me.

Thankyou so much for this critique.

There are a few things that will be changed in the near future - I guess initially, the thought was to make everything work properly and get it out there. On second glance, a bit more time was probably needed.

Your suggestions have been noted down though, and thankyou again!

Firstly, congratulations on the daily deviation! e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

Onto the CSS design. I think you've definitely got the right idea, especially with the colour combination. This particular shade of pink goes great with the brown, as does the green. They all go well together. However, the pink on green is very hard on the eyes and doesn't match up. I would swap the pink on green for brown on green. Also, on the navigation/menu, when you hover, the hover colour is blue, which once again is very hard on the eyes. It's quite difficult to read, so I would also change that to something more readable.

I feel the special features box needs quite a bit of work. I would personally make it fluid, to adjust with the width of the rest of the journal. The reason I say this is because it seems to be floating in the middle of no where.

The background images seem okay to me. Perhaps a little work on the pattern would be an idea. There are some websites around where you can get some very interesting patterns! I also noticed on the live version of the CSS, there is a thick (maybe 5px) border around the entire journal that is in a deviantART green - perhaps this could be removed as I don't think it is actually meant to be there?

Once again though, the colour scheme is nice. I can see wood fitting in with this design - not original, no but fitting with the colours you've chosen. A little more work could go far on this CSS! e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

Thanks heaps matey!

I do agree with the pink. I'm also now considering darkening the green a little - last week it wasn't too bad, but I'm wondering if it's a little too strong now.

The feature box was difficult to decide on. Mainly because initially I had the intention of making it a fixed-width, skinny journal. Then after applying the shadow on the inside, it was forgotten about. I'll probably end up making a fancier header for the features, cause I'm not 100% with my coding just yet.

With the background patterns, did you mean the plus signs? This is another decision that may have been rushed on my part - they were put in there so that the background colour wasn't solid, and I wasn't sure if I should repeat that wooden look over the rest of the journal...

I need to fix that border too. It definitely wasn't intentionally left in

And thankyou again!

This design is heading in the right direction, but I don't think it's finished. For one, the menu link color clashes with the menu's background too much. The pink on green is not a good contrast and causes the reader's eyes stress when trying to read them.

The Special Features box is a box with an inner shadow slapped on, and some text slapped inside. It looks like you took 30 seconds to create this box and called it a day.

Also, all of these patterns are stock patterns you can find in Photoshop, so they are not unique.

You have potential, but you need to perfect a couple things still. Nice try e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

kaotickell In reply to awellis [2009-04-09 02:07:35 +0000 UTC]

For the most point, I think what you've said is fair to say, but I'd like to add some points in.

I agree wholeheartedly that this design isn't finished yet - the trouble with putting an amount of time into something is that you need to walk away from it for a while. Looking at it now, there are definitely things that will be changed when I go in and revise the design.

The box is something that I'm thinking will be scrapped on revising this. ¢nyssi made a very valid point when she said that it looks as though it's separate from everything else, but I'll just add this in; the journal was originally going to be a fixed-width, skinny journal. It's definitely my fault that I've overlooked this, because widescreen users will definitely look at this and think it's strange. But it's something I will definitely be fixing.

The patterns used weren't actually out of Photoshop - the plus was created by me, and the textures can be found on dA. Also, this design was created entirely in Illustrator.

I'd like to thankyou for taking the time for writing a critique for me. Your points were valid, and it's definitely constructive criticism.

i have to agree the colors are different from the rest of these css journals. First impression i was like eww..

Then i looked at it again and I really LIKED it. I think you did a great job at this. Great work. I like looking at the different contrast of the colors. I agree with the other critique deviant art need more people to come up with css journals. It makes the site look better e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)" />

First of all, thankyou so much for taking the time to critique this!

I'm glad the colours have been received well (for the most part ), they're not commonly used, and brown's definitely a colour I'll be playing with in the future

There will definitely be more designs in the near future, I'm having too much fun for there not to be!

This looks wonderful Kelly. Even better than I had imagined it to look. e.deviantart.com/emoticons/h/h… " width="15" height="13" alt="" title="Heart" /> First of all--the concept. It's a lovely concept and the dA community is in desperate need of some inspiration. This CSS will definitely help us to try and achieve a better and more friendly community for all artists. <3

The colors are lovely. They are "fresh" and they pop out. I love the symbol and the title and slogan. Helping fellow deviants is a fantastic slogan! Also, all the textures and fonts used work really well with the overall look.

I do hope that deviants will use this to try and spread positivity and inspiration throughout the site! Way to contribute to a better community for all of us.

I will most certainly be using this sometime in the future! e.deviantart.com/emoticons/l/l… " width="23" height="16" alt="" title="Love" />
