Great information!
A question - how do you resize/rotate/etc the pattern without changing the form itself? In the Illustrator help, it says you do that pressing the "~" key along with the tool... but I've tried several times, in several ways, and can't get it right

I really do hate to bother you, but this technique has been giving me trouble: it wont allow me to make a new pattern for some strange reason. Do you have any suggestions? I've followed all of the instructions in the tutorial and thus far have come up with nothing. I thought maybe you would know something I dont.

copy the the template pattern that I have done (from step 1 up to the last), after that create your own template pattern... Don't put gradients on your patterns, that's the only thing I know that you are having troubled with.. Or you can drag one of the patterns and then edit it...

I figured it out. In CS, you can use strokes and gradients, but you have to drag the pattern into the window with all of the other patterns into it.
