Description View of the new city from the ancient Roman Age gates of Jerash.
Jerash is a city in Jordan, north of the capital Amman. Inhabited since the Bronze Age, it’s known for the ruins of the walled Greco-Roman settlement of Gerasa just outside the modern city. These include the 2nd-century Hadrian’s Arch, the Corinthian columns of the Temple of Artemis and the huge Forum’s oval colonnade. The ancient city of Jerash was hidden for centuries, buried under the sand. It was discovered in 1806 by a German traveler, Ulrich Jasper Seezten, who recognized part of the ruins. It has been excavated since 1925 and projects still continue today.
