what art program did you use to make him? I could never do anything that well with my mouse and computer

Paint Tool SAI, but it's not the program that makes the difference, it's the fact that I use a graphic tablet. Pressure sensitivity is your friend when you draw and you cannot get that with a mouse.

They can be expensive but you don't really need a +2000USD Cintiq to be able to start with digital art and get good results. The old Bamboos worked just fine and they costed 60-70USD (you did not draw on screen but trust me, it's not a problem at all). Always talking about Wacom. Also, Medium and Big size are not actually an advantage, your arm is just going to get tired, a Small is big enough for all your needs. I'm also pretty sure you can find some old used ones that work just as fine as the newer ones.

(I have an Intuos 4, from back when Bamboo was the 'student/cheap' line and the Intuos was the 'professional' line, it was a birthday gift but I got it around 10 years ago and it's still in perfect working condition. The drivers need some reinstallation because of Windows updates, but not exactly the tablet's fault. So while they might be expensive, you're also getting your money worth.)

Right now Huion also makes good (and cheaper) tablets, so it might be worth checking into them. Youtube is a goldmine of artists reviewing these tablets.

I have no idea about your economical situation, so I cannot exactly say 'spend money!' when you don't have an income, or enough money to pay rent or whatever... But I've browsed eBay and there are some good offers for old Intuos (you want either a 4 or a 3), so it might be worthwhile to check there. Also, a basic Intuos Small right now costs 80USD on Wacom's site, possibly less on Amazon. You might try to save up little by little and get a smaller (or an used) one, or ask your family and friends to gift you Amazon gift cards, build them up and get to the objective faster.

(Also, another suggestion, relatives might be more motivated to help you out with this if they see you are passionate about drawing. I have drawn all my life, so I didn't exactly have to explain anything to anyone when I told my parents I would have liked a support to start with digital drawing, but if you are shy about your work or prefer to keep it to yourself, now it might be the time to start leaving some drawings out on the table, tape them to your walls, show that you are practicing your artistic skills.)

So is that what you recommend I get for my first digital drawing pad?Β

The first time I tried a tablet it was a Trust and I returned it the week after I bought it. Bought a Wacom two years after that and did not regret it at all.

So yes, I suggest a Wacom (either an old Intuos 4 or the current Intuos line, the small one is 80USD new and comes with a software), but I also suggest you get an alternative software to use aside from the one that you're given (Medibang, GIMP or Krita, they're free and fairly easy to use) and buy from a place where you can return it if you don't like it.

A tablet doesn't make you instantly good with digital art. It's not even easy to use the first couple of times, looking at the screen and drawing on your desk, so trust me, you'll be cursing it and wonder how can people even like these things for the first week. But you have to draw with it every day to get the hang of it, at least in the beginning.

(Then you're going to love it and the only thing you'll have left to do is practice, just like you would do on paper.)

good to know, I'll look into prices for a Wacom. Thanks for the advice! Is there anything specific I should look for in an art tablet? For example processing power, storage space, etcΒ

Haha, no problem, and I personally like the fact that I don't have to re-charge my pen, so I would look if the pen needs batteries or has a charging station/cable and go for a model that doesn't need that. I would also really like for my tablet to be wireless, but I can live with one connection cable.

The drivers don't take up much space, what does is the art software, just make sure your PC has the free space and specs to run it. (Some older models got driver updates for the newer PC OSs out there, but unless you're going for a used tablet, it shouldn't be a problem.)

Tablet companies will try to wow you with pressure levels and they're important but you need to consider the whole package (cables, batteries, size, drivers, bundled art softwares, company reputation, etc). Trust me that, as a beginner, you will not notice how many pressure levels you have, as long as there is a change when you press down. If you have been using a tablet for a while and then up your model, *then* you'll probably notice a little something changing. So levels are important if you have the experience to notice them. These days, everyone basically guarantees you over 2000 levels, and that's just fine for everyone. (Still, do check how many levels the pen has, if they're less than 1000, maybe steer clear of it.)

OK, do you know what a cheap one costs? Or should I shop around and see if someplace like the Microsoft store or Apple have better deals right?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to Skyhunter22 [2018-09-23 20:52:30 +0000 UTC]

The basic one from Wacom costs 80USD on their site, on Amazon I think you could find a better deal (and they also do returns, but I have no experience in that regard).

I don't think you're going to find better deals in those stores (why people believe Apple offer deals is a mystery to me) but you can always go and take a look.

In Italy there are electronic stores, like Mediaworld, Unieuro and so on, where they sell tablets as well and sometimes do discounts, but I have no idea where you live what ind of stores you have.

It would become your character. You can draw it, commission drawings of it, use it for RPG or comics. You can edit the design a bit, since it's not a closed species but rather a design. And lastly I allow reselling, though not for a higher amount than what was paid for it (unless it has additional art), so if you ever want to sell it at a later date, you can.

Then I guess it depends on what plans you'd have for it.
