The limited palette is a great exercise in colour. I usually encourage my patchwork students to start with 2 or 3 colours. I've found that what makes it work is the values of light, medium and dark of each hue. Simple but very effective.
Your little painting has made me think of the ochres. I think I have been avoiding them. A few years ago I made a conscious decision not to make dull coloured quilts anymore. I was sick of seeing cream, cream and more cream at exhibitions and students work. So almost everything I have done since is bright. But I really like the yellow ochre, especially with the blue. Mmm, food for thought.
I'm so glad I've met you Karin. You are such an inspiration!
I've finished my salt painting. Will post soon, once I can take a good photo of it. It was lots of fun.

Hey Sue, cool to have someone who likes to talk colour and art.
Yes, the earth colours combined with some primaries can be very effective. It kind of makes me think of Miro. He used the combination of earth colours (raw sienna, yellow ochre, various grays), along with bright primaries and black and white. I think you would love his work.
Yes, it's good to start out with simple colour schemes with students. I often tell my students, you only need three to get started.(or even two) I'm learning to appreciate the earth tones and variety of grays, as well as the effectiveness of limiting the palette to two, three or four colours. The resulting painting is usually more harmoneous, than if you use all the colours in your paintbox, which was what I often did in the past.
Looking forward to your salt painting...
