THE PITCH

"What if Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa after spending a two week binge on Lovecraftian literature?"

Like a combination of Stephen Kasner’s dark grunge, John Jude Palencar love of smooth skin and rugged background texture and the twisted mind and style of Gerald Brom, this painting will represent all that is neo gothic art in a single piece.

I wanted to display something everyone would understand: a witty neo gothic appropriation of a famous artwork perhaps. But then, upon researching gothic and neo-gothic art I decided something simply aesthetic was not going to be enough. This painting is the result of a decision to produce something from cold, hard meaning, fact, and a melancholy view of the surrounding world.

Every last detail of this painting is a piece of a gruesome puzzle.

What you see before you is a representation of the worst that human-kind has to offer: an abomination which at first glance, you may not wish to glance at again. This is what represents the true core of humanity. Humans got to where they are in the world because they are the most cruel, heartless mammals on Earth. Your instinct to look away from this representation mirrors humanity’s instinct to “look away” from its own flaws, pretending that it is not the horror you see before you. We see ourselves as civilised, uniform, and benevolent. But humans are the biggest, maddest monkeys in the forest and that is why we are where we are today.

At first you may see this as a painting of a woman being destroyed by outside forces, but in reality the entire painting is humanity, destroying itself.
The figure is shrouded by a wig of innocence, a mask of war covering further facial monstrosities and a black dress of mourning that is covering humanity’s greed and lack of care with the garments of a mourner.

Deep in its core, is a faint glimmer of morality, caged by the structure of the figure’s form. A cage of flesh and blood that the limbs of the masses, giant tentacle composed of so many hands, are attempting to reach: to display to the outside, to distract from that majority that is horror.

Question, do you really feel this is what humanity is really like (I know many people who aren't like that) or are you intentionally imitating Lovecraft?
