The day the sunflowers bloomed is the day my life began. The late august air fell heavy on the earth and the orange light of lamps bled through the streets. The car sliced through and there was talk of the reflection of raccoon’s eyes. You always slow down when you see that red shine. I’m not sure if it’s logical, but it’s one of your rules of the road.
We pulled into Carrols overlook, turned the music up and danced. We danced to Andre 300, Summer Lovin’ and that catchy song whose name and artist I can never remember. We danced to it all. We danced because it felt like, somehow, by dancing we were taking control. Like the world was stopping for us in these moments and if we were to stop reality would have to catch back up with us, give us a swift slap in the face and knock us off our feet. It was one of those nights that summer is all about. It was a night that I started to realize what life is all about.
