This tutorial was really helpful! But I'm kinda stuck on how you blended Β everything in Step 4. You see how your picture looked before Step 4 in Step 3? That's how mine looks, how did you get everything to come together in the last part?Β

Thank you! This tutorial was done a long time agoΒ
and while I was still learning so..
Ok, Once you get all your base colors done, add the cell shadows/highlights.
Get your preferred blending brush (I use a "Hard round pressure brush") and
blend them together, add more shading or color if need be (I did this till I was satisfied
with the results).Β
To get that dark shadow under her quills and torso, lock the layers and get a big soft brushΒ
and apply the shadows where you want them.
Sorry if this is hard to understand, I'm not good at explaining things... T^T
Here are some 3D drawing techniques that help me

Wow this is helpful even if you are Paint Tool Sai. Just got to figure out now to make The smudge like brush on there. ^^

I know someone who uses sai, and you can edit your brushes on there to give you a perfect blur brush. Just takes a little experimenting. Good luck!

How large of a canvas would you suggest for picture about that size?
π: 0 β©: 1
KarnelianKallie In reply to Tri-Chiy [2014-06-24 21:12:07 +0000 UTC]
I usually use a canvas ranging from 1000 to 2000 pixels, Any bigger that that makes it hard to blend a 3D look into it
and my computer slower.
The size of this canvas in 1500x1151 pixels, about 20x15 inches.

Okay. I got a program for my tablet with a blending tool. So this should look good.

Yeah. I want to practice before I do that collab with my bro.
My younger brother requested this. I laughed when I saw his sketch from a year ago. (He is pretty bad at art, and to stubborn to teach.)

Sounds like my youngest brother. Would never stay still when he was younger.
Still can't unless he has something to do.Β
When you are coloring in the picture do you need to worry about the lines much?

Tri-Chiy In reply to KarnelianKallie [2014-06-24 22:07:27 +0000 UTC]
Sisters too.
I meant more like: do you have to keep the colors precisely in the lines?

KarnelianKallie In reply to Tri-Chiy [2014-06-24 22:14:20 +0000 UTC]
No I don't, after I draw the sketches, I lower the opacity on them and color under them, after I color everything
I take the sketches away and fix everything up, add lighting and shading and all that

I got this down now.
So probably no more questions.Β

I actually tired this and...
how in the world did you get the blending done that well???
Mine looks all smudgy and like a 5-year-old did it. :/Β
Β
Am I just lacking practice, or is there a secret step in there between step 3 and 4?
π: 0 β©: 1
KarnelianKallie In reply to Bombchu-Link [2014-03-31 02:21:48 +0000 UTC]
Hmm it may depend on the opacity you set it one,
what opacity is it on?
I put mine around 35 to 40
