Description I did this as a portfolio piece around this time last year. I wanted to illustrate my passion for... Illustrating?? Hahaha, you know... what I mean...

Because this is older and I've had a year to look at this, it is now CRITIQUE TIME!
I was really proud of this piece, but now there are some things I would like to change:

ANATOMY/FABRIC: Her legs and possibly her arms are too long for her body/age (She is supposed to be nine or ten years old), and the way the dress is bunched up makes the anatomy look funky.

COLOR SCHEME: The color scheme is ALL OVER THE PLACE. If I were to color this now, I would try to stick to a narrower color pallet because my eye gets confused by the purple bows; there is nothing else in this picture that is purple (should have made them red and the dress white). The baby chicks blend in with the yellow dress and they are hard to see. The barn stands out too much, but it would be fixed if I re-colored the bows.

STYLE CONTINUITY: The style of the girl against the style of the chickens... I feel like it could be more consistent. Make the birds more detailed.

There are also things I adore about this picture and would like to see in more of my artwork:

EMOTION: I feel so nostalgic and happy when I look at this image, because it's taken straight from my memory banks. I loved my chickens so much when I was little! I may not have looked like this young lady, but I DID get a dress absolutely filthy doing this exact same thing.

BRAIDS: Braids are one of my favorite subjects! I really enjoy adding all the details needed to make them look stunning. They work very well in my favorite sort of composition, with something curving across the page to lead the eye.

LINE: This is one of my best jobs with line art. I hope I scanned this before I colored it, because I want to color it again! I'd also like to have a hard copy of the line art to hang up. If I didn't scan the lines, you can bet I'll be re-drawing this scene in the future.

Even in spite of any critiques that this picture may have, it still looks lovely! ^v^ Sometimes what I do with a picture when I like it but feel I could do better on after my style's improved is re-draw it and then compare the new version with the previous version. It is cool to see the progress when they are paired up side-by-side and feels great because it shows how much you have improved.

Also, great job in conveying the emotion in this picture! It definitely conveys the feeling of nostalgia and chilhood memories perfectly. Even if one has never had the experience that the girl in the picture has, one can instantly relate to it and recall when they were that age.

Overall, excellent work, this one really caught my eye, and your use of copics in detailing the hair is beautiful! ^v^

Aww thank you! I have been really working on my personal style and I think this is really close to what I want- Some things I want to do differently as you no doubt saw in the artist's description, but I appreciate your compliment!

I think this looks brilliant but if you were to redo it with all your critiques then it would turn out even better than it is now. The hair is outstanding and I love how you coloured the skin.

I totally forgot about this one! I really agree with all of your comments and critiques about it. You should do the "draw this again" meme for this one. Especially since you had drawn it for your portfolio.
I think my personal favorite thing about this is her hair. These are some of the best braids you've drawn and I love the detail with her hairs! One thing I've noticed is that when coloring black hair, it can be very easy to lose line details. It sucks. -_-
Anyway, thanks for sharing! I forgot how much I like this one. ^_^

I always thought I had this on DA but I tried to find it and couldn't.
I totally should do this one again! My commission slots are clearing out as I finish up stuff, so I might actually have some time. I'm debating whether I should take one of my own slots up for another personal project, but I'll have to see where commissions get after vacation.
Thanks, I tried really hard not to cover up detail by using W6 and the tip to tip blending method with black for the darkest areas. It was so nervewracking! haha.
