Description Green-Wood Cemetery is famous for its beautiful landscaping, its collection of glorious flowering trees, and its famous residents. On one side of the park, hills rise to 200 ft., allowing for spectacular views of the Brooklyn Battery and lower Manhattan. The Battle of Brooklyn monument stands prominently upon the highest point of park's main thoroughfare Battle Avenue, along with several grand celebrity tombs. Its land value today must be several billion. (Let's hope the real estate developers never find a way to get at it in our lifetime.)

This is the OTHER side of the park - also steep and hilly, and not as well traveled.

This unpaved wooded path, thick with overgrowth, dead leaves, spiny seed pods, and felled branches is where daring cemetery tourists hike for a glimpse at some of the most beautiful and forgotten mausoleums in NY.

This photo came out dreadfully colorless, a brown blight -  however in stark black & white the noir filter has brought out much of the beauty and the serenity of the scene. Now imagine a light breeze, the rustle and crunch of dried foliage, and the cries of robins in the air, and imagine a regal looking tomb just beyond the next crop of trees, its verdigris roof bright against the grey sky.

I hope you enjoy it as I did!
