According to the original story it's according. Even the faith of the stepmother was very more grusome. ciderella maried to the prince who forced the old stepmother to wear iron shoes red hot and order her to dance with it until she die.
Traditionals stories were not for childrens. They became softer with time and .... Disney touch.

You’re thinking of the Grimm Brothers version of Snow White.

A person who was a storiteller and came in schools to explain his art explained us for stories like "red hidding hood" for exemple or Hansel and Gretel there was sommetimes more than 200 versions, with always littles difference with the areas and so....
(Sorry for my poor english)
He explained us, for fairy tales, and stories in general, also there are versions adapted for anny audience. He showed us for exemple story books about the sames storiy, but make in differents countries and in differents times. Snow white from Disney is not exactly the same than in a story book for kids in the 70's, or in a japanese edition.
Because you will not say or show the same things to a 8 years old child or a 12 years old. And the medium make also the difference. Just think about the book "The Hobbit" from the Tolkien, the adaptation in comics (who was pretty nice), but also the movies from the 2010's. That was sometimes very differents stories.

I have an even darker idea in mind, but the continuous eye gouging is a nice idea. Very Greek mythology like.

In the original story they cut off parts of their feet to fit the slipper, they later get their eyes picked out when they arrive at the wedding
