Description So I got Manga Studio 5 while it was on sale on amazon (it's usually around $50-80, but was only $18.99 @ amazon, so I grabbed it since i had heard good things about it, and wanted to try it out) and it arrived today (a day earlier than expected, yay)
And so I made this random piece as my first ever test pic in the program.

I'm not very familiar with photoshop-like programs, since I usually use SAI, so it took a little bit of messing around at first to get the hang of it. The program itself seems fairly easy to learn though, I'll probably switch to this program rather than SAI for pictures that I want the more 'hard brush' look. I'll probably play around with it more before completely switching those pieces over though. For the most part, I'll still use SAI, since it's still the program I'm most familiar with, and has the best brush quality I've tried yet in any program for the softer look. Still need to figure a lot of things out, but since I bought the program and don't have to worry about a trial period, I have plenty of time to do that.

So yeah, while this is pretty quick, messy, and highly experimental, I like how it turned out for my first try with the program. No critiques please, I wasn't trying to get things perfect, just testing some things out.

I have to say it's definitely a bit different than what I am used to seeing from you but I actually really like how this turned out.  There seems to be a freedom and movement to it, plus the composition is really nice.

It may be experimental, but it turned out really cool! That expression combined with the sketchy lighting/atmosphere is really intense.

It seems like the wolf it climbing out of the ground. As if he was a part of the earth. Really cool.
It would be interesting to see the same drawing done in all the programs to see the difference between them, but that would take a lot of time haha

Kasaurus In reply to Noctualis [2014-07-10 01:37:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!
That would be cool, like finish both and add roots ripping from the ground too or something, but yeah, I don't really have the time at the moment. This was just supposed to be a quick pic to test out the program, and now I need to get back to commissions. :'D

Noctualis In reply to Kasaurus [2014-07-10 01:40:50 +0000 UTC]

haha the roots are a good idea too! Commissions are fun too, but it does add on the stress of pleasing the costumer rather than making art for yourself. You win some you lose some I guess

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kasaurus In reply to Noctualis [2014-07-10 01:54:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I still do experiment sometimes with commissions (unless I have specific things the commissioner wants), but yeah, it is a bit more stressful trying to live up to expectations and making the commissioner happy, so I get a bit more stiff with those and take more time on them, while as when it's art for myself, I can afford to be more quick and loose with things since it's not held to any expectations to suit one person.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Noctualis In reply to Kasaurus [2014-07-10 02:04:00 +0000 UTC]

yeah thats totally understandable. But you have to remember that they commission you for a reason, because they like what you do. so it keeps you going haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kasaurus In reply to Noctualis [2014-07-10 02:09:02 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I'm really grateful to anyone who commissions me, and I do try and have fun with each one, and learn something for the future from them as well. I just get into a bit of a perfectionist state of mind because I don't want to disappoint anyone that commissions me. cx

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Noctualis In reply to Kasaurus [2014-07-10 02:14:16 +0000 UTC]

yeah I would do that too. I want to impress them and make them happy so of course Ill be trying to make everything perfect. My art teacher always said that artists don't need someone to tell them they need to work harder, they need to tell them when to stop. kind of works for commissions too haha. I'm always seeing something that I want to fix when others think its perfect XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kasaurus In reply to Noctualis [2014-07-10 02:24:36 +0000 UTC]

Seriously, I have the hardest time deciding when to stop, since I go so into detail with some things. It used to drive me insane trying to figure out how to detail everything, and often times I took it too far and it ended up being worse from overdetailing. Lately I've been trying to keep things simpler, with still enough detail so I feel satisfied with it, but I could always add more, and it's a tough call sometimes as to when to stop myself. xD

Noctualis In reply to Kasaurus [2014-07-10 02:39:52 +0000 UTC]

haha. There is a fine line between beautiful detail and too much. I've been doing more simple images recently, but when I tried to go into detail I would just work for 2 days straight sometimes and it would just be worse and worse. Taking a break would really help me see what I was doing wrong. And luckily I keep a bunch of save files in case an earlier version was actually better

There really is haha. I've had the same happen to me so many times, it's so frustrating D:

Noctualis In reply to Kasaurus [2014-07-11 23:22:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it is frustrating! But it does teach you to go at a steady pace and really look at what you are making. Hopefully one day there won't be as many mistakes XD

do You like the program so far? I've been looking around for a digital drawing program and i've only heard a little about this one.

Kasaurus In reply to MegPaige [2014-07-10 00:13:12 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I like it so far, though I haven't used it but this once, so I can't really offer a review for it. If you're looking for an art program, I would recommend it though. It's currently selling on amazon for a really good price for any art program, which is the main reason I got it. It's kind of similar to photoshop from what I can tell, but a lot more simplified and easy to understand (photoshop confuses me a lot). If you're curious as to what the program looks like, maybe sometime when I stream, I could open it up and show people. c:

And that would be awesome, ill be sure to check it out if you stream. Thank so much for replying.
