Jasper seems to go with the flow, drifting through life without any strong opinions of his own. He knows how to be charismatic, even if he still comes off as a little stand-offish. At the same time, people tend to get the feeling that even when he acts like he’s listening, he’s just waiting until he can leave and do something more worth his time.

He’s a lot more apathetic than he realizes- things that would upset anyone else don’t seem to register, and he doesn’t treat good things that happen to him as cause for celebration either. He tends to avoid confrontation until he thinks it’s necessary... and oftentimes, for him, that isn’t until the last second. He catches on quickly in almost anything he tries his hand at, and if he puts in the elbow grease, he can at least reach competence. Still, he doesn’t seem to acknowledge any of his accomplishments as his own, or as anything that special.

While he’s a good acquaintance, he’s hard to get close with. There’s a lot of barriers he puts up, whether consciously or not, and only a few people can easily break through. He’s fairly perceptive, but tends to choose to ignore other people's feelings. Deep down, though, he really is trying his best.

Biography:
Jasper was the youngest of two, but he practically grew up as an only child. His older brother, Charles, was thirteen years older than him, and he left for college when Jasper was barely old enough to remember him.

His mother was, to put it plainly, someone who had never wanted kids. And while Jasper never lacked clothes or food, she never connected with him the way a parent should.

It was fine. At least Jasper said it was. He didn’t need parents or a brother when he had a best friend. Carter and Jasper were like two peas in a pod- when Jasper was with Carter, he could be a kid. Jasper watched Carter’s back, and Carter watched his. They were closer than family.

And then Carter moved.

In the grand scheme of things, Carter wasn’t gone very long. He left Cherry Falls after elementary, and came back in high school. But three years is a lifetime for a child, and Jasper changed a lot.

Halfway through his second year in middle school, his mother left. It had been a long time coming; she’d never cared much for her sons, and Jasper said he didn’t miss her.

But changes came with her absence. He ended up moving in with his brother, whom he hadn’t seen in years. He was less supervised than he’d ever been. And while he never hung out with the wrong crowd, he never really hung out with the right one, either.

By the time he reached high school, he was smoking and skipping classes almost daily. He never failed, but he never excelled in his classes either. If he applied himself, he could’ve succeeded, but he never saw the point. No one had ever encouraged him to try his best, so when he did, the results didn’t matter to him.

Carter moved back freshman year, and Jasper didn’t know how to fit back together again. Luckily, Carter did. Less than a week after they reunited, Jasper was at his house, eating dinner with his family again.

It took a long time, but Jasper slowly warmed up again. He never completely quit smoking, but he didn’t skip nearly as much, and his grades got better just from studying with Carter. He took home ec as an elective one year, and found something he actually liked. With the encouragement of Carter’s family, Jasper began to cook more.

Eventually, graduation came around. He took a gap year, then went away for culinary school. Two years later, he graduated, and was supposed to return to Cherry Falls.

Carter had promised to pick him up from the neighbouring city, and his flight had just arrived when the outbreak happened.

He’s spent the last few months looking for Carter and his family, and after reaching the mall, has made base there.

tl;dr:

jasper was raised by a single mother who left when he was 13. he ended up living with his older brother after that. because of the lack of any real authority figure in his life, he slacked off a lot in school and never had any ambition.

thanks to reuniting with a childhood friend in high school, he found an interest in cooking, and ultimately pursued that as his career path. after graduating, he returned to cherry falls.

after the outbreak, jasper's been looking for carter and his family. he's made the mall a temporary home in the mean time.
