To stay warm. Insects can't generate their own body heat, so by cultivating mass they can retain more heat.

No. Nyla and Vanessa are both tropical species so they don't naturally put on weight in the winter. Olivia, on the other hand, can double or triple in size in the winter because it gets cold where she's from.
