Our mystery character has a few rings on each hand that attract the sparks to their hands instead of their skin! The inside of the rings are insulated.

Hm, mysterious. And I feel they look like Roland a bit, maybe some connection. If so, then it may indicate Roland is on this journey for more than kicks, that he has something to fight for and his attitude is to keep people from finding out and/or to keep himself focused in his own way on task so that he doesn't give in to despair.
