This painting has been entered into a montly themed art contest on eBay. The contest's theme this month is "Ode to an artist", and entrants are required to create artwork in the style of another artist, or redo a well-known work. I'd love to do Escher or Ryden, but don't want to have any copyright issues, so I chose to emulate Tamara De Lempicka's style of work that she did in the 20's. Tamara's work often features women painted in a "soft cubist" style.

Note: This nurse is my own concept, but has been painted in Tamara De Lempicka's style.

Update: I won 1st place....

good job! I got here by clicking on a minimized copy of it from sb's journal (so obviously there was no title of it), and my first thought was "smells like Lempicka"

congrats for the first place!

Thanks so much! I'm glad Lempicka fans recognize that this is in her style Who's journal did you see this in?

I like her, but I am not a great fan of her art. I know her probably because of the fact that she is Polish (as I am). I really can't remember whose journal was it, I vistided many people on that day. ; )

I'd love to see Escher interpreted by you. He's one of my favourite artists and it would be so cool to look at something that is a hybrid of your and his styles...

There are a lot of people on dA that are not just using his style but also copying his works (in their style, of course). No one seems to mind - it's just an hommage to an artist.

About her lipgloss - you were right not to add it, the lipsticks in the pre-WW2 years were very matte (and would remain matte for decades to come).

Thank you so much for the awesome comment
I didn't do Escher for this contest because we were all going to be selling our work, and I think that's when artists take note of others using their work - when others make money off it. I might do an Escher-inspired drawing sometime just for fun though

Oh, yeah, if it was for commercial use... Then it's better to be sure you won't be sued.

As for the Escher-inspired drawing:
I can't wait!

Sweet...
I'm not well informed about art, that's cuz I'm self taught about art (and everything lol), so I wouldn't know about Tamara De Lempicka's work, and can't give you a comment on how well does this piece resembles her style of work.
I like the how you did the hair... I would add lipShine to powerUp the sexiness of the nurse.

And wait, how would one have copyright issues if one uses a similar style on a totaly different painting with different concept?
One cannot put a copyright on a style, right? You can't have a copyright on an idea.
It would be nice if you could though, but you can't.
Or can you?

You know something I don't?

katat0nik In reply to ArtBIT [2006-06-23 20:22:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks
I am self-taught too, and heard of Tamara De Lempicka through a friend Tamara doesn't add a lot of shine to lips, so I left my nurse's lips flat too.

I believe it is true that you can't copyright a style. However, there have been cases where artists haven taken others to court for infringing on their work - and they WIN, even in situations where both works do not fully resemble each other. I figured I better be safe & emulate older artwork. Better safe than sorry
