Gotta love that lighting! It's a really nice pink, actually. Setting is on point and this is something to be proud of yourself for!

Mmm textures! Don't custom shapes just make the nicest rocks ever?
I think the contrast looks pretty good in this one, it works well for the time of day you're depicting. I think if you added more of a cold, slightly more de-saturated colour to the shadows, it would make the sky really pop!
If you're unsure about working with contrast or values, a good tip is to find a stock photo that you think has beautiful contrast, turn it black and white in Photoshop either by using the black and white tool, or placing a black layer over the top and changing the layer mode to colour (I wouldn't advise using the desaturate tool, I think it really washes things out a bit too much) and do a study of the values used in the painting. I used to go a bit over the top with contrast in my paintings, and I found that this really helped me work with more subtle contrasts.
Master studies are always great for this, too! I've done some studies of the Hudson River School painters en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson_R… as their paintings often have the most beautiful, delicate lighting. I really need to do more of these, they're a great tool for learning!
Studies of screenshots from cinematic movies or TV shows are good too!

The contrast here is good, as least to my eye. Appropriate for the desert environment. And, since you have saguaros, I assume it's Arizona. Is it supposed to be Monument Valley?

Ahh thanks! I'm glad you think so :D
I'm not sure XD it's all from my head, and probably based from skimming random desert photos for inspiration. I've never been to an actual rock-formation-dotted desert myself!

I ask, because there are tourist brochures, ads, and even postcards for New Mexico that show Saguaros, but we have none, zero, nada, zip. Saguaros show up only in a very specific, hot & dry climate zone, which is generally the Sonoran deserts of Arizona and Mexico, and sparingly in California. I'm not even sure there are any in Monument Valley because it's close to Utah. They don't even come close to here, so we always know who's been here, and who hasn't.

Ahh, trick question XD I actually googled 'monument valley' afterwards and yeah, I didn't really find any saguaros haha. Interesting info!
