Description

This render started out MONTHS AGO as a lot of things and ended up being none of them. It only exists because I refused to put as much work into it as I did and not have something to show for it.

It was supposed to be the result of a cloth dynamics class, where I ran a cloth simulation to drape the skirt over Laura instead of posing with bones. I already knew it would be a nightmare because the skirt had 6 layers, but it turned out to be impossible because of how the mesh was created. A better modeler might have been able to fix it, but not me. So using bones it is then. Turns out it’s also an ancient mesh that had only four bones, so it needed to be entirely re-rigged. Multiple layers like that? Clipping and weighting is a nightmare. I wasn’t holding out much hope I could pull it off. There was a reason I had marked this dress for cloth dynamics in the first place, after all.

*Note to self if I ever forget in the future and wonder how the hell I managed this: delete all the under layers, rig only the top skirt, then in object mode, duplicate the top skirt and scale down to create the under layers.

128 bones later, the weighting is looking better than I could’ve hoped for. I had a very specific pose in mind for this dress with a very specific pose with Ignis behind her, but as I went to pose the dress, I realize it’s too long and would obscure the details I wanted. Scaling the entire skirt down ends up with bad things happening, so the entire concept had to be scrapped until I can put her in a shorter ballet outfit. It may take a while to find and fit something suitable, as I don’t prefer classical tutus.

So this is what we have. It’s not dynamic, fancy, or artistic—more like a “I worked on this at one point.”
