Description I'm trying to relearn how to take portraits... of myself. I want models and to shoot other people, it's just too difficult to create art when you're playing all roles at once.

However... I just colored and cut my hair.. and wanted proof. So here it is. This is not a great portrait... I don't know if it is even a good one... but I wanted to share it with the world nonetheless.

I hope you enjoy..

As I scrolled down the page to write a comment I noticed something - cropping about a quarter off the top would leave the image composed of half face and half hair. I like the composition as it is as well, but I think that the half hair thing could make the image look more designed, if that makes sense.

I love the colours which are subtly visible in the black of your hair. I can see shades of purple and turquoise, like peacock feathers.

I really like the strong vivid read of your lipstick because it gives the image just the right amount of colour. I'd like to see this shot, or a similar one, with one of your eyes completely visible, or at least visible enough to allow your gaze to cast a spell of expression over the rest of the image.

I'm not sure if I have any right to critique anyone so much more experienced with this than I am, but I will give you my honest opinion.
Here is what I like: I love the way the hair cuts across the image at an almost perfect 45 degree angle. It almost begs me to crop it to the corner so that the image is exactly half hair and half not. I like the lip color and the shape of the lips are excellent. e.deviantart.com/emoticons/k/k… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Kiss" />
Things I don't like or maybe just don't understand: It's a shame we can't see more of you or at least more of this new hair you are talking about.
I would like that your whole face be in focus, but i can see that you wanted focus on the hair. The skin is a bit over-exposed and again i know the focus was on the hair. I notice a lot of photographers are slightly over exposing images these days. It is a technique i'm not fond of.
Overall i like it. Now pull back and show us the rest of you! e.deviantart.com/emoticons/h/h… " width="38" height="15" alt="" title="Hug" />

This is certainly captivating portrait work and I applaud your ability in achieving this impact with the classic red-and-black combination; oldie-but-a-goldie, so to speak.

Also in terms of genre, the arrangement speaks fair volume. Red emanates confidence, while the screen of hair and barely peeking eye express a hint of coquettishness. Juxtaposition, contrasts, complexities, all serve to elucidate, thus giving rise to powerful portraiture.

It is all the more a misfortune that the much of the technical aspects serve only to distract. The vivid tone and texture to the lips are remarkable, while the surrounding skin area regrettably display too stark a contrast, as well as a tonal range that could definitely fare better with some fine-tuning.

Overall though an intriguing capture... your lips do bear an extraordinarily delicious shape e.deviantart.com/emoticons/h/h… " width="15" height="13" alt="" title="Heart" />

Thanks so much for your thoughts!!

I have to agree with you on most everything you said That's what sort of breaks my heart about this shot.. the technical aspects are pretty poor! This was about as close as I could get with what I wanted but in reality it's nowhere near to what I visualized. That's the worst thing about self-ports! To sort of add to your list of issues, I think the composition is off as well. I want the framing shifted down.... it cuts off at a strange place below the lip.

But I will definitely look at this again and see if perhaps I can improve the tonal range on this. Maybe it could salvage some of the technical merit

Thanks again, hun.. i totally appreciate it

If I could make a suggestion? The idea of black and red is so tried and true... this could look wonderful as a reflection off a smudged mirror. It would all the more enhance the contrasts and tie in with the "coy" factor. Something fun to experiment? What do you think?

ooh.. that sounds intriguing. D'you mean like a re-shoot of this in a smudged mirror? Cuz that might be pretty damn cool

Yeah!! That and eyes always seem to carry more... weight... in reflections. I think. Mirrors are fun. And you get to look at your hot, badness self for a good few minutes

ok.. well that last part was enough to almost turn me off from the idea

I'll play around with that... i think you gave me some interesting ideas for another shoot

I really like this image. It is balanced nicely and I love the air of mystery that is created by just the partial white of the one eye showing. It has a very sultry/exotic feel.

I find the splash of color among the light and dark contrast makes the image pop nicely.

I wish the highlights on the nose where just a tad less bright, but overall I find this to be a lovely portrait.

And now, totally unrelated to how I feel about the photograph, I like the new hair color (and that shade of lipstick is stunning) - but I want to see all of your haircut!! how short did you go?

Thank you for the critique sweetie!!

I'll try to see if i can somehow balance out the tones on the skin to make them blend a bit better. That might help the glare on the nose

I'm glad you like this one.. and I'll show more pics of the hair later.. it's actually not that different from what i had before.. except that it's black and I have short fringe-y bangs now

I love that you finally took a picture of yourself again. Good to see you! I always like close ups. Don't know if you meant to do it, but I like the slight blur to the face. Gives it that little bit of depth that I long for.

Nice Kat but I would of loved to of seen at least a pupil showing on that eye And woman, how can we see your hair cut if your only showing part of it?

The 3 main colours work really well together... I agree with other comments that a little more eye should be showing... but all in all - fab shot!

ps: you cut your hair??? how short are we talking here?

Beautiful shot of a beautiful girl! Makes me wish my other half and I were in your neck of the woods, you and Steven are probably the two people I would love to take photos with, and that coming from someone who is camera shy unless she's playing dress up is a big thing!

Such a pretty Kat! You know I am always happy to model for you. I could use a good portrait of myself as well. We should do that this weekend! What do you think?

personally I think it would be a bit better if a bit more of your right eye was showing (instead of just the white)

But then again you are always beautiful.

Oh i couldn't agree with you more

I wish there was more of that eye.. I wish the composition was shifted more down so you got more of the of the face and less of the hair.. umm what else.. oh yea.. and i wish i had lit it probably hehe. So I completely agree with you!

Thank you
