Description My way of painting manes. No smudging, no burning, no dodging! I used to do it with premade hair brushes some time ago, but as for now, I don't use any. I'm actually more satisfied of their outcome since I stopped to, so I thought that maybe I'll share what I came up with ^^ The brushes I described are easy to make 'at home', so I didn't include a brushpack [especially since one of them is 'stolen' from another artist ] If you want, just save those three as 'manebrushes' or something like that.

Another good thing when you're trying to shade your mane is playing with your own hair! Twirl them, stand at different angles to the light, observe how does it affect your hair, and try to compose your work based on that

Plus, a REALLY lazy way of general shading is merging the hair layers and playing with the curves (CRTL + M). Though personally I hardly ever use that

I'm not sure if there are any grammar or spelling errors... Sorry in advance Anyway I hope it's understandable.

Unfortunately, I don't have a premade brush for that. You'll have to rely on the presets that I've presented at the beginning.

more tuts on like, manipulation all together, you should do a series, like....
1. Manes
2. Tails
3. Cutting
4. Blending
5. Lighting
6. Eyes
7. Effects.

Um... Maybe you overlooked the category, but the only thing is, that this tutorial was meant to help mainly digital painters, not manipulators I mean, I don't have, and never had, any clue about how to do manipulations and no experience whatsoever with cutting, blending and all the rest related But if my tut helped you with your manips anyway, even a bit, then I'm happy it could

I can't get over how awesome this tutorial is! And it's so simple! You only use 3 brushes! Thank you so much for answering my prayers and creating a tutorial on how to do manes and tails properly (particularly white/cream colored manes. I can't tell you how long I've been looking for a good tutorial on creating white manes!)

Does this method work the same way, for say, a black mane? Or do you do something different for that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KathyKnodoff In reply to Crazy-Sparkles [2010-04-18 11:39:23 +0000 UTC]

Yay, nothing makes me more happy than hearing I was able to help! I agree, tutorials on doing lighter hair are quite difficult to find ^^ I have problems with white manes myself, but I hope I'll manage to get better in drawing them as well

I dare to say that this method is even easier when doing black manes, because depending on the base color I use, I'll need only one color to do the shading part, or sometimes I just do the lighter parts right away, with using no shading colors at all

I have GIMP, but I believe GIMP does have those brushes. How do you get them? >.<

KathyKnodoff In reply to Shilohx15 [2010-04-10 20:15:19 +0000 UTC]

I'm afraid I'm unable to help you. I use Adobe Photoshop, while its brush packs have a completely different format than GIMP brushes.

Hmm... It seems like various ways of drawing manes manually don't differ from each other that much

I've actually learned that a lot of photoshop tools are in corel too (crappy program i use), just sometimes using other names. It bugs the crap out of me that corel's brushes don't make the manes go as smooth as they look on photoshop. That's what makes me so mad I just end up erasing it all and letting it be... Maybe I can play with this idea a bit and try to form it to fit corel (Until I make enough money to get photoshop for mysef -.-)

I actually really like this tutorial...there a lot of tutorials out there about shading manes, buuuut...what I especially like about this is that you point out where lighting would go. Shading is something I really struggle with, so...looking forward to trying this ^^
