Description Poster for "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego" on Facebook.
I got to design Carmen as well as the poster... this is the only place she's actually visible, we always had to obscure her face in the game >_<

Really cool looking.  I wanted to play this game, but unfortunately didn't know about it till it was taken down.  I wish I could learn about all the interesting looking characters.  Really cool that you got to design this.  Good work

She does have the tendency to hang around with weird people, doesn't she?

Wow. You have some very odd critiques on this piece considering how amazing it is.

I was always a big Carmen Sandiego fan growing up and your style totally breathed new life into the franchise. I was unfortunately never able to catch Carmen in the game before it was removed from Facebook. One of the main reasons I played it was to eventually see what Carmen looked like in the new style, so thank you for making that finally come true. Geography rocks, and so do you!

Why thank you! yeah it was unfortunate that it didn't last all that long on Facebook, it seems that it wasn't the right platform for that type of game. Even worse was that they didn't allow us to show her face :/ It was a last minute decision by the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to hide her face at the cut scene in the end (which was silly IMO, because she's been shown in every other game) so these posters are the only place you can actually see her. Glad you enjoyed the piece!!

It seemed pretty popular when I was playing it so I was pretty surprised when I found out they were taking it off Facebook. I have to ask though, was the design for your Carmen influenced by Jennifer Lopez being involved with the possible Carmen Sandiego movie? I only ask because I see a kind of resemblance and I remember that when Sandra Bullock was supposed to be playing her a few years ago she suddenly started to resemble Sandra. If not, that's cool. I was just curious.

It makes sense that you have to obscure her, it makes her more interesting. Though why does everyone insist on using the brown hair, brown eyes and yellow dress or the black catsuit? Did everyone forget about the black hair blue eyes and orange dress? I notice that your logo hints at the where on earth version even though the actual Carmen still wears the yellow and black with the brown hair.

That was the description of her that The Learning Company gave us to use... her red and yellow combo has become iconic

It has it was always in the games prior to 1998, I actually hate the Learning Company's design of her, black is not her color, they should have kept her in yellow or orange.

I don't believe they were the ones who redesigned her... they later bought the rights after the show went off the air, I think Warner Brothers was the one to change her design. I'm by no means an expert on all things Carmen so don't quote me on any of this I was just required to design her with those colors

Classic! I remember back when Carmen Sandiego games were 3 color marvels on the Apple II. Great take on an old school character Katie. Very nice to see you're keeping busy!

carmen is a good name, not so sure about the sandiego name, especially since it's a 'where in the world' thing and San Diego is a place

hahah Sandiego is her last name and it's been used since the early 90's... not San Diego the place (^_-)

What does it mean then?
Cause surnames do often derive from place names. Like Hastings, or DuBois.

I don't think it means anything... she's meant to be hispanic so I think they chose it because it's a hispanic name

NekoChanMaasta In reply to Katie-O [2011-09-19 20:22:53 +0000 UTC]

All true names have a meaning.
The only possible meaning I can see for Sandiego is the place name literally meaning saint diego (diego itself being possibly derived from Santiago among other things).

It just seems like it's a bit at odds with the whole place/name thing.
