wow... I'll never understand how you manage to get smooth shading effects like that with a mouse- thats really impressive.

Crtitique-wise.... your use of textures is really good; the chainmail and the grass effects look good, as do the little details you've added all over the piece to bring it to life. I only have two crits really- and they're silly things that don't really make a huge difference anyways ;-D

firstly, the colours- your colour work and shading is excellent, don't get me wrong- but the colours are a little over-saturated for me- although thats more of a personal taste thing, i guess. But I'd suggest just playing around with the hue/saturation and brightness/contrast settings a little, to give it that slightly darker touch a bit more atmosphere.

secondly, the background- whilst it looks great (and I wish i could be bothered to put as much effort into just one background as good as that!), I don't think you've spent as much time on it as you have on the characters and the foreground

anyways... great work

Sweet, thanks for that long and very helpful critique. My colours tend to run too bright - I'm working on that... need to find that hue/sat button. Yes you are correct, by the time I got to the background I was so stinkin tired of the whole painting I kind of rushed it... maybe I'll go back and do a little fill in painting when the tiredness wears off. Again thank you!

Hopefully my husband will make up his mind and order one before his parents leave the U.S. We were going to buy a Wacom, but heard there are others out there for half the price and almost as good. Thanks for the compliment! It's a work in progress, and I'm reading lots of tutorials - so learning with each new pic. I think I'm hooked!

When I read the title and looked at the picture, I thought to myself, "brings us all down." very cool picture, I've always found it difficult drawing downed people.

The chainmail texture is cool, though it kind of distracts from the piece- mostly cause on his other arm it's still running verticle, which is odd.

But the trees and the mountains are absolutely gorgeous, and REALLY add to the piece, as does the details in the sword! The crack in the shield.. (Did you have a reference for that sword? It's so realistic!)

And the anatomy seems right on! Very good picture!

Katied2 In reply to Kerttu [2006-05-28 11:25:25 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thank you for that detailed comment! And yes, the silly chainmail is running in the wrong direction on his L arm--crazy textures-- need to find out how to rotate them. *sigh* I noticed that it was off when I uploaded it. I work in close up so much of the time I sometimes forget to back off and see the picture as a whole to make sure everything fits. The sword I worked on trying several different styles - my own included and ended up with bits and pieces from one photo - as well as just out of my head the design on the hilt and blade are my own. Thank you so much for your compliments - they tell me I'm doing something right!

This is a very nice scene. I love how you made the chain mail and the cloth really stand out. I only have one question. Are those spurs on the feet of the one on the ground? I'm only asking because I don't think they had spurs like that Other than that I'm really impressed with this.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Katied2 In reply to ShuHan [2006-05-28 03:51:02 +0000 UTC]

Yes they are, and you are right in that the middle ages had different types of spurs but since my scene is based on a fantasy piece I'm writing, I decided I could put cowboy spurs on a pseudo middle-age knight. . Thanks for taking the time to look and comment, I am always open to suggestions! I might just go back and change that

Hi again.

Great improvement eith the neck. There still seems to be a bit of a little lump on the left side (viewer's left), but that might just be me.
Other than that, everything's great now. It's a difficult angle, but you hit the nail right on

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Katied2 In reply to silverae [2006-05-27 06:57:50 +0000 UTC]

I know, I studied the anatomy of the neck in detail, and in this position - with the head thrown back, the neck muscle jumps or pulls out - it looks a bit strange. But you were correct in that the V of the two neck muscles was not in the correct position and the second (viewer's right) was too announced. So thank you! I like it much better this way.

Beautiful picture. Your definitely rock everything that can be rocked when it comes to colouring

However as a little constructive criticism, something seems odd about the neck of the standing warrior.
The shadows are a bit off and the neck/throat area seem too big, lumpy perhaps even. I think it's just the 'v'-angle drawn by the muscles in the neck that are too big.
Other than that everything is great

Katied2 In reply to silverae [2006-05-26 14:44:16 +0000 UTC]

I see what you mean. Almost like too contorted for comfort. Hmm will have to look at that more closely. thanks for the comment and constructive criticism - so many people are afraid to speak the truth and afraid the artist will be offended - I want others to look and give feedback cause I've stared at this dang picture so long (in working it) I can't see all the problems.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

silverae In reply to Katied2 [2006-05-26 16:10:41 +0000 UTC]

Yes I know exactly what you mean. Besides I think of it as a viewer's/fan's responsibility (if possble) to help the artist evolve and get even better. No good in saying 'aww this is great' when there are flaws that can be fixed.

Anyways you're very welcome and I'm just glad that you're one of the artist who can actually handle a little constructive criticism, some just freak out and retaliate
