Description Spot Illustration for *Astrocat of their liger/wolf hybrid character, Morgan. Those aren't robotic arms, it's armor attached/connected with leather straps. Also, if you can identify the skulls, then know one of them is much smaller than it should be for the species. XD

Reference for the facial expression was used with permission from the original photographer: [link]

Done in marker and acrylic on 9" X 12" bristol

wow, that's awesome!
All the details that you did makes me smiled
The fur are very realistic and the armor on his arm are very impressive. Also, the other thing that I want to say is to talk about the colors. They blend very well, great choice of colors and I also love how the rocks have been drawn!
Wonderful job!

Loving the fur texture, very realistic :3 And the armor is love, you're amazing at making it look like real metal!

I spy a beaver...and the larger one makes me want to say either wolverine or badger for some reason....

Oh, thank you! ^^

The bigger skull could be a wolverine, very similar! It's actually based off a black bear (small, I know), and the little one is a rabbit. =3

Not a problem :3

I suppose I should try studying more bones, maybe then I'll be able to tell weasels from bears xD
Though I admit, they are as similar as you said lol.

KatieHofgard In reply to CrimsonDragoon12 [2010-03-27 01:34:36 +0000 UTC]

They really are very similar, and I also didn't go for extreme perfection in the skull to make it look exactly like a bear, so it's sort of just... bear-like. XD

Bear-like is more than good enough for me xD

Wow, astonishing job! I love the way you shade... And do pretty much everything. The pose and expression are great, too. I can't find anything to complain of.

My quess for the smaller skull is some sort of mole, if that's what they're called in English (the small, a bit mouse like critters with pretty round bodies, tiny ears and nearly no tail), and the bigger... I think it's some sort of bear.

KatieHofgard In reply to KigaWeirdo [2010-03-27 01:24:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, glad you like it!

The smaller skull is actually a rabbit or hare, or loosely based of them. But the bigger one is indeed a bear! Small bear, but bear nontheless. ^^

You're welcome ^^

Ah, of course! Far too big for a mole, what was I thinking x3 At least I got the other one right, yay! o3o

I really like the way you rendered the armor on the arms; it came out with a nice texture difference from everything else.

And my guess for the skulls is that the big one is some sort of bear, (my initial guess was Black Bear), but if thats the one that is too small, it could be a grizzly. And the little one looks like a rabbitt or a capybara (or however you spell it)

KatieHofgard In reply to CairnCoyote [2010-03-27 01:22:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, it's cool of you to point that texture difference out! I didn't even think that you be a neat thing about the piece.

Also, you're totally spot on for the skulls! Black bear for the top, and rabbit for the bottom.

CairnCoyote In reply to KatieHofgard [2010-03-27 03:59:20 +0000 UTC]

Texture is a pain in the arse for me; I have a hell of a time trying to make everything seem different from everything else. But you really pulled it off!

Sweet! I have no clue why I said Capybara, but it came to mind lol Where does the little jaw come from? The one on the tree? Is that a weasel?

KatieHofgard In reply to CairnCoyote [2010-03-27 04:29:37 +0000 UTC]

The little jaw I just sorta made up, probably would be somewhat canine though? Not sure! XD

Did I tell you how awesome this is? Ill just have to tell you again! ITS"S FREAKING AWESOME!!!

I love what you did with this. It's so much fun seeing a more aggressive side to the character.

I love the detail of the armour, it was nice that got included, even though it was extra work. You did such a great job on the colour of the mane as I know that's a difficult colour to get in real media. Huzzah for fur and floof detail, he looks so totally hug-able. Well, maybe not right at this moment...

I like the added details of the skulls and bones, it adds a nice edge the scene. No worries on the top one being smaller, maybe it was young. Plus Morgan is a big character so it works on that level too

As someone who hates colouring rocks- nice rocks! They set the scene so perfectly. I particularly like the colour you choose for them. It's really cool how the rocks, bones and snarl suggests a much bigger story going on ^^

Thank you so much for taking this commission. It's so exciting as I wanted to commish you for a few years, so it was great to be able to get one

I am so glad that you like the final result, I will admit it's a BLAST to work on all black characters like this!

Also happy you let me have artistic freedom with the spot background, I love making cool rock/dirt textures, and drawing skulls and little trees, so it was fun on that level too!

KatieHofgard In reply to Wandering-wolves [2010-03-27 01:18:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I use the sharp edge of the broad end of my markers to do details, and when doing little acrylic touch-up I have teeny brushes. XD

Really nice picture, i really like the pose and colours, only "prob" i got with it is that his chin, nose and mouth looks a bit feline. otherwise it's an epic pic

Goshawk [2010-03-26 13:41:40 +0000 UTC]

The smaller skull looks like a member of the rabbit family to me.
The bigger one... all I can say is that it has a big sagittal crest! My random guess is hyena.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatieHofgard In reply to Goshawk [2010-03-27 01:17:30 +0000 UTC]

Rabbit indeed, you got it! Hyena skull is really similar actually, it's a based off a black bear. Exaggerated that sagittal crest a bit much I think.
