Description "And, we lower the coffin, and put to rest, Edric Lancelot Flowers-Butterfly, beloved husband, father, and King of Mewni."  The High Priestess of Mewni gestured her arm out towards the casket, decorated with bouquets containing every sort of flower that could be found on Mewni soils.  All the funeral guests hung their heads as their beloved friend and monarch sunk into the ground below, never to to be seen again.

In the very front stood Eclipsa Butterfly, Queen of all of Mewni, and Edric's grieving widow.  She hekd her royal magic wand, passed down to her from her mother, through almost twenty generations of Butterfly princesses.  The wand was morphed into a parasol, useful for shielding herself from the light drizzle of rain that fell now.  As Eclipsa watched the lower the coffin, tears stung her eyes and blinded her, but she could not wipe them away with her free hand.

Holding that hand was her and Edric's only child, little Luna Butterfly, Princess of Mewni and heir to the throne.  Eclipsa looked down at her daughter, only five years old and now without her father.  The small princess was crying like there was no tomorrow.  Eclipsa knelt next to her as the funeral attendants heaved piles of soil on top of Edric's casket.  "I know, sweetie.", she whispered to her weeping child.  "I'm going to miss him, too."

She looked into Luna's chartreuse eyes, filled with tears.  "Moonflower...listen to me.  Its just you and me now.  We have to take care of each other.  We have to be there for one another, always.  Its what Daddy would want.  We must carry on, for him, and for the good of Mewni.  Do you promise me, darling?"

Luna nodded vigorously.  "I promise, Mama!  I promise!"  Dropping her parasol wand and using both of her gloved arms, Eclipsa wrapped her in a hug, stroking her soft hair, as pink as peonies, and rocked her gently as the King was buried.

Luna had no idea that one day, she would wish very deeply that she had forced her mother to make the same promise she did.
-------------
"My Queen!  I have crossed through scorching deserts, freezing blizzards, and dimensions filled with unimaginable dangers, all so that I may retrieve this single magical rainbow flower, and prove to you once and for all that you are my one and only true love!"  Luna took the doll of Queen Venus the Fairest, her great-great-great-great grandmother, continued with her little skit.

"After seeing what lengths you are willing to go in order to prove your love to me, I realize now that you truly care about me for who I am, not for just my beauty!  I also realize that my love for you is just as strong!  Let us wed at once!"  Luna bumped the little heads of the dolls together and made kissing sounds with her mouth.  Her content little fantasy was interrupted by clapping.

Luna looked up to see her mother standing in the doorway of her bedroom, smiling and applauding.  "That was beautiful, Moonflower!"  The young princess smiled.  "Thanks, Mama."  Even at the tender age of six, Luna was a hopeless romantic.  She loved hearing the love stories of her ancestors and using her dolls of the past Queens to reenact them.

Eclipsa knekt in a ladylike position beside her young daughter.  "Now, Moonflower...I'm certain you remember, its been a year since Daddy went to heaven."  And as much as I miss him, which you must know, is very much...my Mewnisters strongly advise that I remarry."  Luna looked up at her mother with wide, glassy eyes, hugging her Venus to her chest.  "Why?"

"There are many deadly diseases that have no known cure, darling.", Eclipsa explained.  "My Mewnisters are afraid that what happened to your daddy will also happen to you, and then Mewni will be left without an heir.  They want me to remarry in the hope that I have children with my new husband, and keep Mewni secure should, Celestia forbid, anything happen to you."

"Who are you going to marry?", Luna asked, getting teary-eyed at the thought of getting a new stepfather.  "Will I have to call him Daddy?"  Eclipsa shook her head.  "No!  Of course not!  You have a daddy already!  I came here to let you know that I would never, or could never, try to replace your father!  And neither could you.  No matter who comes into our lives, he'll always be in our hearts."

Luna nodded, wiping her eyes and smiling up at her mother.  "Okay, Mama.  And I promise, I'll be nice to my new stepdaddy."  Eclipsa smiled gently.  "That's my good girl."  She wrapped her daughter in a tight hug and kissed each of her pink flower-shaped cheekmarks.  "I haven't decided who I'm going to marry yet, but rest assured, Moonflower, he will never take your father's place.  No one will.  Your daddy is irreplaceable."

Luna would someday find out, to her grief, that while her father was irreplaceable, she herself was not.
---------------
"By the power vested in me by the Goddess Celestia,", Glossaryck announced.  "I now prounce you husband and wife, King and Queen of the Butterfly Kingdom, supreme rulers of all of Mewni.  You may now kiss the bride."  Eclipsa looked at Luna behind her, carrying a basket of dark purple flower petals, and gave her a small smile before giving her new husband a peck on the lips.

The second wedding of Queen Eclipsa was a smaller affair than her first one.  It was a rare occasion that the Queen of Mewni married more than once.  Even Queens who had lost their beloveds premature in life, like Queen Febe the Red, preferred to remain grieving widows that wed a second time.  Eclipsa's dress was a simple deep violet frock with a cinnamon ribbon tied at the high waist, and a skirt that flowed around her like water.

The minimum number of wedding guests applauded for the newlywed couple.  The bride scooped up her young daughter, who squealed with delight, dropping her little basket and letting the petals scatter around the altar.  Eclipsa smiled at the now King Shastacan, who wore a heavily powdered face of indifference.  "To our new little family!", the Queen cried happily.  Her exclamation was met with cheers from the crowds.

"Don't you want to hold your new stepdaughter?", Eclipsa asked Shastacan.  The new King of Mewni glanced from the corner of his eye at the princess, smiling at him sweetly while wearing a lilac flower girl dress.  "I'm too tired.", he replied rather sharply.  "Come, my dear, we must entertain our guests at the wedding reception."  And with that, he strutted up the aisle, his jeweled cane making click-clack sounds as he exited the church.

Luna's lip quivered.  "He doesn't like me.", she sniffled.  "Oh, no, no, no, Moonflower!", her mother cooed, holding her close and stroking her hair.  "He's just a little overwhelmed by all this, that's all.  He's awfully far from home.  The Spiderbite Kingdom is a long way from here.  He needs to adjust to our castle and our way of life."

Eclipsa kissed one of her daughter's cheekmarks.  "Give him time.  He'll warm up to you eventually."  Luna smiled and leaned on her mother's shoulders as she was lovingly carried into the hall where the reception was being held.

If she had only known that that would be the last smile of hers for two years.
-------------
Luna sat by her bedroom door, tears running down her face, rubbing the sore spot on her face where her stepfather had slapped her.  Ever since Shastacan had married Eclipsa and become King of all Mewni, life had become a nightmare for both mother and child.  At first, he had just been distant from his new wife and stepchild.  Then, over time, it became clear that he was determined to erase all memory of Luna's father.

He constantly insulted the late King Eric to his family, calling him a "soft-headed fool" and a "baboon-faced moron".  He reminded the Queen constantly that he was her husband now, and commanded that she completely forget about her first husband and focus entirely on the one that lived now.  To accomplish this, he confiscated all his predecessor's personal belongings, portraits of him, and even the gifts that Eric had given to his wife and daughter, and had them burned in the fireplace of the castle lodge.

Then, Shastacan shifted his focus on Eclipsa and Luna.  He remarked how he saw his wife as unfit to be Queen, saying she was "weak" and "overly trusting".  No one was sure if he really saw her that way, or if he was just trying to manipulate her into handing over the reins of the kingdom over to him.  Not only that, he mocked Eclipsa for her interest in the dark arts that her mother had dabbled in saying, saying she should stick to hosting tea parties, as it was "more suited for her level of capability".

Not even three months after he had moved into Butterfly Castle, rumors of his infidelity spread like wildfire through court.  He was seen taking several servant girls, all young and pretty, into the bedroom that he shared with his wife, while she was not around, sometimes by force.  One time, Luna saw him trying to seduce her beloved nursemaid, Fanny.  Whether or not she succeeded, Luna never found out.  All she knew was that a week later, Fanny disappeared from her life, and a new nursemaid was hired in her stead.

But perhaps the one who had it the worst was little Luna herself.  It was no secret that Shastacan hated his stepdaughter.  Why, no one knew.  Perhaps it was because she was a reminder of his wife's beloved first husband, whom Luna so resembled in appearance and manners.  Perhaps it was because even if he did have a child with his wife, said child would still be second in line for the throne behind Luna.  Perhaps he was simply jealous of the affection Eclipsa showed her daughter.

But whatever the reason, Shastacan showed no holding back when it came to mistreatment of his stepchild.  First, he verbally abused her, saying she was "an embarrassment of a princess", and "unworthy" to be heir to the throne.  Luna was certain, as was many others, that if not for her status as heiress, he would consider her no more important than the peasant children he loved to chase off the streets while riding high in his gilded carriage.

Then, over a short period of time, Shastacan's abuse breached into physical violence.  Whenever someone tried to stand up to him, against his harsh words, he would not hesitate to strike them.  One time, poor Luna had to witness her stepfather ruthlessly beat a little boy who worked in the kitchens, even younger than herself, with his jeweled cane, just because he remarked that what the King was saying to him was "not very nice".

With such a beast as a husband, Luna found it no surprise that her mother was spending less and less time at the palace.  However, Luna had no clue where it was her mother was going during her time from Butterfly Castle.  She asked her once, but Eclipsa sputtered and scolded her daughter, saying such questions were "nosy" and "unladylike".  This surprised Luna.  Her mother always shared everything with her.

Finally feeling the sting in her reddened cheek start to fade, Luna opened the door and poked her head out, looking both ways before moving towards her mother's bedroom with light, silent steps.  This was around the time that the Queen returned from wherever it was that she went off to get away from Shastacan.  During this horrible period of their lives, the comfort given from one another was the only thing keeping them from slipping into depression.

As Luna slipped closer and closer towards her mother's quarters, the sound of whispers and gasps grew louder.  Peeking through the doorway, she saw a hoard of servants crowded by the bed that the Queen and King shared at night, where he had lain with many a woman besides his wife.  Right now, however, the only thing lying on it now, was the Royal Magic Wand, still in the shape of her mother's purple parasol.  One of the servants was reading a note, and all the others were reading over her shoulder.

They looked up to see the little princess enter the room, her green eyes wide and innocent.  "Where's my Mama?"
-----------------
Sixteen-year-old Queen Luna smiled as she watched her husband, King Oliver Forest, play with the young orphans.  She couldn't wait to have children with him.  She couldn't wait to become a mother.  She was determined to be a better mother to her daughter, than her own mother had been to her.

It had been eight years since Luna had been crowned the youngest Queen of Mewni, following her mother's abandonment of the kingdom.  Now completely at the mercy of her stepfather, he kept manipulating her into making laws that benefited only him and the other nobles and royals, while the poor and middle-class suffered.  Looking back, Luna was ashamed, and was determined now to undo all the wrong she had caused under the hand of the former King.

Luckily for her, Shastacan had met a gruesome end shortly after Luna's tenth birthday.  He went off to visit his family in the Spiderbite Kingdom, where a hoard of Size-Shifter monsters had ambushed and eaten half the royal family, including the former Spiderbite prince.  Some living witnesses claimed that the one who had devoured Shastacan had been Globgore, the very monster with whom Queen Eclipsa had eloped with.

Either way, Luna was finally free of her abusive stepfather and the chains that he had shackled to her.  No one was surprised when she didn't declare a period of mourning for the late King.  His reputation of womanizing and familial abuse had made him infamous throughout all of Mewni.  Instead, Luna started her wedding preparations to her childhood sweetheart, Oliver, immediately after hearing of Shastacan's demise.  No one could blame her.

Luna glanced at the clock nearby and saw that it was almost time for her to meet the Mewnisters and the Magical High Commission at the castle.  Bidding farewell to her subjects and her husband, she hopped into the carriage and started off back towards home.  She only hoped that she wasn't running too far behind schedule.

Once she returned, she hurried up to her bedroom.  It was required of the Queen to wear the official Queen's crown, a large gold tiara with spikes pointing upwards on the side, and a large bright purple diamond in the center, to all important royal functions, such as weddings, special galas, and, of course, royal meetings.  When she got to her room, however, she stopped dead in her tracks.

There, sitting on the foot of her bed, the one she shared with her husband, was an older woman, with pale skin, striking violet eyes, and teal green hair bunched up into tight curls around her head.  She wore a long dress that matched the color of her eyes, that had a lacy yoke with a purple crescent moon facing right.  Long black evening gloves covered most of her arms, and a wide-brimmed hat rested upon her head, decorated with a clump of big white feathers with long, crooked twigs sticking out of it.  On each pale cheek was a maroon-colored spade, both exactly alike.

Luna recognized her right away, the woman sitting on her bed, a woman she thought she would never see again...

"Mama?"

The woman smiled at her.  "Hello, Moonflower.  Its been a long time hasn't it?"  To her surprise, Luna's face immediately hardened, and she barked out a single word.  "GUARDS!"
-------------------
300 Years Later

"Is this your daughter?"  Eclipsa gasped as Moon turned the page.  On the next page, there was a portrait of a young woman with shoulder-length pink hair, chartreuse-colored eyes, and a pair of five-petaled pink flowers on her cheeks.  "Luna..."

"Yes, Luna the Child.", Queen Moon Butterfly said, eying her great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother's reaction.  "Was crowned the youngest Queen of Mewni at only eight years old.  After you left the kingdom."  A look of sadness and guilt crossed the face of the Queen of Darkness.  "I remember...when I returned to the castle...she had me arrested...crystallized without a trial."

"Well, of course she did!", Moon cried.  "You abandoned her!  You left her alone without a mother, with her abusive stepfather, to elope with a monster, the very kind that we're supposed to be against!  I mean, running away with a monster is bad enough, but you deserted your own daughter!   What kind of mother are you?!"

Eclipsa didn't look up to meet Moon's gaze.  Instead, her violet eyes focused on the page with Luna's face on it.  "I didn't want to desert her.", she said softly, barely above a whisper.  "But I had no choice."  "What do you mean, 'you had no choice'?", exclaimed Moon.

Eclipsa sighed.  "At first, I did consider taking Luna with me.  I wanted us to be a family together, me, Globgore, Luna and Meteora, far, far away from Shastacan and his wicked ways.  Together, we could help monsters and Mewmans reach harmony with one another."  Moon raised her eyebrows at that.  Eclipsa had wanted to take her daughter with her when she eloped?  Part of her wondered who Meteora was, but she set that thought aside to focus on the matter at hand.  "Why...Why didn't you?"

Eclipsa finally looked up, and Moon saw that there were tears in her eyes.  "I thought of the Butterfly Kingdom, and of Mewni.  If I took Luna with me, there would be no one else to rule but Shastacan.  I knew that the people of Mewni would suffer under his total reign.  Luna, on the other hand...Luna was good, just as her father had been.  I knew that she would be good to the people.  I had to leave her behind, so she could keep the kingdom safe from Shastacan...even if that meant I would be separated from her."

Moon's heart softened.  "Why didn't you tell her that?"  "There was no time.", said Eclipsa.  "Globgore and I had to be quick.  He had been hiding out in the castle for weeks, and we knew that the night had come for our escape.  I had tried to get Luna alone since he started hiding, but we were always interrupted.  When the night came, it was now or never.  There was no time to explain the situation to her.  All I could do was hope that she would forgive me."

"It was years before I caught word that Shastacan had died.  News moves pretty slowly when you're separated from the rest of society.  But as soon as I heard, I knew this was my chance.  I had to see Luna again.  I had to tell her why I left her behind.  I came out of hiding and went straight to Butterfly Castle, hoping she would give me a chance to explain.  But she didn't let me have a word in.  As soon as she saw me, she called the guards and condemned me to crystallization."

The tears were now running down Eclipsa's face.  "Not a day goes by that I don't wish I could've done things differently.  Maybe if I had explained before I left...if I left her a note...if I had found some way to tell her my reasons...things would have been better."  She touched the page, her fingers grazing against Luna's picture.  "I love you, Moonflower...and I'm so sorry...please...wherever you are...forgive your stupid mother..."

Neither Eclipsa nor Moon could see, but right behind the Queen of Darkness, having heard every word, was Queen Luna Butterfly the Child, a spirit of the heavens, with tears streaming down her face.  Closing her eyes, she felt her spirit become one with the magic of Mewni, her broken heart finally at peace with her mother's apology, her soul finally able to rest.  She whispered onto the wind as her spirit ascended to the Magic Realm...

"I love you, too, Mama...I forgive you... "

SVTFOE belongs to Daron Nefcy.  Luna Butterfly, Oliver Forest, Eric Flowers, and Venus the Fairest all belong to jgss0109 on deviantart.  I just love your Queens of Mewni, and find them way more interesting than the canon ones!  Keep up the good work!

Thanks, it'll be good and well known for it as well. I had in mind that Hekatia said in her will that somebody in the Spiderbite family will be with her daughter and I had a good idea that what if the Magic high Commission was about to read her will to Eclipsa but she was with Edric at the time. So now this makes sense as soon as the aftermath of Edric's passing and when Luna was growing up, the Commission will read her mother's will to Eclipsa and meet with Shastican.

This a wonderful short story. I also liked how you mentioned Shastican was from another kingdom, to explain why he would not honor the Butterfly kingdoms ways.

Well, I didn’t make that part up. It’s canon. In the book of spells, it said that Shastacan was a prince from the Kingdom of Unlikely Spiderbites, and Eclipsa’s mother arranged for them to be married to seal an alliance between the kingdom. I just made it so it fit jgss0109’s au
