Description A celebration of life, the determination to break through to the end, gaining companionship and sanctuary.

Part 2. See part 1 > [link]
Both of these drawings are very meaningful to me and something I really greatly enjoyed making. They are full of my own ideas about life, creation and joy. I wouldn't mind hearing some interpretation, really.

pencil/ebony pencil/white gouache/workable fixatif
prints possibly coming soon.

It's ... so beautiful!! Especially his left hand. Sorry, I'm too tired to offer any useful criticism.

Oooo i love the depth to this and the hammerheads just rock my socks so hard XD

*cough* interpretation is....sharks=death; light=life; hence sharks in the light means death is part of life

It kinda reminds me... life comes from the ocean. I'm imagining one single creature staring at the sky above the sea and wishing to feel the air and breeze... and that creature is the first in setting off outside the ocean. And with it many others follow within time. Somewhat like evolution...
And now we're so spreaded, we're so many, it's weird to think we can actually feel lonely between so many of us.

Wow, I need some rest, not sleeping since... for 24 hours maybe? Helping my cousin's dog having her puppies.

The sharks. Are so cute. Oh my god, they make me far too happy.
Your technique on this is impeccable. However, the anatomy on the lowest right shark (a white?) is way off. I think perhaps its head is turned at an angle contrary to the direction in which its body is turning. In addition, either the body is too short or the head is too big, possibly a problem with foreshortening?

I'm still going to favourite this though, because I love the two hammerheads in the light at the top of the piece, and the composition and idea themselves are stunning...

Lovely work.

Hm, I appreciate the critique but I'm not quite convinced. I did actually have a reference for that peticular shark and I thought it was pretty distinct it was strongly foreshortened and kind of swimming away in an S-shape as sharks do Anyway if it doesn't look convincing then I didn't do something right. I am still a little confused though so I'll have to do some more shark anatomy research.

thanks so much, though!

Haha...I'm just anal about shark anatomy because I've been a fan of them for more years than I remember. (and all the other sharks look great, so no further complaints on that account)

I still love the fact that you put them in this piece!

For this peticular piece, sharks are a very important symbol for me. They were kind of a childhood obsession and now are kind of the overall symbol of nature to me. I love teh sharks thanks!

Oi. I can safely say I adore the incredibly organic, natural feel to your pencil lines. All the anatomy on the sharks and the fellow they're circling around is so very weighty and convincing, which are qualities that are extraordinarily hard to come by. The composition and the alternating darks and lights all over are a great setting for your superior shading... ah. Much love.

The passion ye put into this piece and its companion shows all too well. Personal works = the best.

i'm not normally one for interpretation, but i can tell you why i like this one.

the way his hair is suspended, the floating plants around him, the poses of the sharks to his side and above, all of this give it a feeling of warm depth. like he's surrounded in warm tropical seas, looking up at a bright moonlit night, and the sharks are encouraging him to go on the hunt. he's got a great beauty, much like a predator, and he has such an innocence to him as well. a joy in just being alive.

i honestly like this one better than the companion piece. there's something very cold and distant about her, all alone in space it seems, and he has a feeling more like a tight hug. but that's just my two cents. both are very technically good, it's more a perception thing

Ahh, thank you so much. That's very interesting your interpretation because it's kind of similar to what I was thinking myself. I really appreciate it! This was the second one I did and I do like it more. Then again they were supposed to be along a similar theme but still different in their meanings, interpretation and emotion.. I have a long line of my own ideas but I don't want to put too much stress on those

thank you so much!

maybe you should emphasize more of your own work. you really do some intriguing work. especially if you have more themed ideas like this one

Well.. a lot of my work has a lot more idea behind it. I'm just not sure about how much I want to force it onto other people. I suppose I should offer my own descriptions about it more often, lest I keep getting dissapointed

ladyshalafae In reply to katya-h [2005-09-20 17:11:25 +0000 UTC]

well, if people not understanding your works, i would recommend more description then. i prefer it when you encourage people to figure it out on their own, but that's because i think your pieces can really speak for themselves if one just listens to them.

and if other people feel it's forced on them, they can go screw themselves. 8P art is about the artist's vision as much as it is about the viewer's interpretation. and i honestly prefer an artist's interpretation better than some random schmuck's ideas

Sometimes I don't think people listen very well? I appreciate critique on technicality as it is very important to me but sometimes I wish people would go a step further. Perhaps I just haven't haven't been doing this enough myself. I do sometimes prefer to leave it open to interpretation though sometimes I get so excited I want to talk about it all day.

SOMETIMES people don't listen well? *grins* i think it's normally all the time that they don't listen.

i think you actually do a good job with critiquing. i just think a lot of the people on this site don't know how, and so they can't reciprocate. i also think some people are so dedicated to their style they don't know how to critique others...something i'm guilty of

Very true Style is a really bizarre thing. I know for one that it's definately not conscious. But I think no matter what people do they usually have an idea of what looks like it could work or not.

true. some things will just look wrong, even if it's meant to be stylized.

i find i kind of dislike when people justify an obvious mistake by calling it style

You wouldn't mind hearing some interpretation? ALRIGHT!!! I'm making this all up so all you mythology buffs don't get all p-o'd, I know none of this is true.

Well, he's name is Carcharhinidae. He was the child of Venus, know one knows how she became pregnant with him, that was stolen from her womb by the current when Venus when bathing in the ocean. Being immortal, he was able to breathe under water. The current pulled he far into the unknown world of the underwater kingdom. It was the coral mermaids that found him and raised him as a merchild. They taught him their ways of life; most important was to gather the pearls of eternal life so the human population would not find them and live forever. At one point in time, he was able to tame all the sharks in the ocean, making them his servants. He loved to go to the surface and stare at the blue ocean on a sandy beach, admiring its beauty. Unknown to him, it is his mother, Venus, and her tears for the loss of her child that purify the ocean's waters.

I'm I nuts? Maybe just a little.

Amazing picture, I love how you make that ebony pencil your bitch. ^_________^ All the details are on target and you make such awesome sharks.
