Backstory (and Queen Haina's, too, I guess):
King Sonora was the king of the Sphinx Kingdom, the Sparkling Sands. He ruled with his wife, Queen Haina, and eventually, they had two children, Thar and Tanami. The two royals had very different ways of ruling, with Haina wanting to conquer more lands, and Sonora wanting to befriend other races to gain allies. They frequently fought, and eventually, Haina got so tired of his desire for peace that she transported him to a mural on one of the palace walls, where he can only speak when a spell is cast. She then ruled the Sparkling Sands all by herself, trying to conquer new lands, starting with the town of Somnambula. However, the pillar whom the town was named after stood up to her, and thinking she wouldn't be able to figure out her riddle, Haina agreed to leave the town forever if Somnambula failed to solve said riddle. However, to her shock, Som- okay, you should hopefully know all of this already. Anyway, Haina left the town forever as promised, and angrily returned to her palace. Over a thousand years later, Haina noticed her spell was breaking, but she planned to cast it again. She soon got visitors - Somnambula, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie! They were sent on a quest to befriend the Sphinx Queen and make allies with her kingdom, which she refused at first, but after seeing the state of her town improve from their happiness and friendship, she changed her mind, willingly accepting their friendship. Before the trio left, the spell was broken, and King Sonora had returned, glad that Haina had accepted friendship. The two made amends and eventually had their children. Years later, Haina enrolled Tanami in the School of Friendship.

Personality:
King Sonora is a gentle giant, towering over most - if not all - ponies, but not wishing to harm them. While he was trapped in a mural of him and Haina, he had hoped his wife would change her ways, but each time she talked to him, she did not show any signs of remorse. He was still able to hear everything she said and see everything she did, so when she finally accepted friendship, he instantly knew what had happened when he broke free.
