Description Yay, I've finally got off my backside and written this tutorial! ^0^ I have tried to make a CG tutorial before, but I never end up finishing them, because I change the way I colour (in at least some small way) almost every time I CG >> I've been sticking to this method mostly though, so yeah ^^

Sorry about the large file size

I can't believe I am asking a question, because this tutorial is so nicely put together and very well explained!
My question is: If you are too draw different color hair (example: Blonde) what color choices would be appropriate? For the shading, highlighting and so on - thank you!

kawaiihannah In reply to ahbiscuit [2012-01-23 07:04:59 +0000 UTC]

Aaaand I realised I forgot the blonde - I usually use shades of light browns to shade with (maybe tinted with purple) and either light browns or yellows to highlight~

Thank you =^^=
It really depends on what colour you're using, but here are a few examples of what I do;

Pink, shade with warm/cool purple, highlight with light pink, peach or yellow.
Red, shade with warm purple, heading towards cool purple, highlight with orange, yellow or pink.
Orange, shade with red and warm purple, highlight with yellow.
Yellow, shade with oranges and brown, highlight with light yellow/white.
Green, shade with blue/cool purple and highlight with yellow.
Blue, shade with cool/warm purple and highlight with light blue, sometimes with a hint of pink or yellow (depends on the shade).
Purple, shade with warm/cool purple and highlight with pink and possibly yellow.
Black/white is usually a dark/light grey and I often tint it with a lighting colour from the background. Most often, it ends up with a subtle blue or purple.

As you can see from above, I like using purple and yellow to shade/highlight XD

All of that depends on the individual drawing though, because if you're in a dark room, or a dense forest etc, that will affect the colours and if you have strong lighting, that will also affect the colour (esp highlights) ^^ I usually find the best thing to think about is the mood of the overall picture and choose the shades/highlights based on that.

I hope that helps a bit~

Wow that's ver helpful!, This kind of coloring is sooo pretty and shiny. It also looks very time consuming seeing that you would refer to the pen tool a lot for shadows and highlights. But I want to see if I can achieve the same effect so Imma try it sometime when I have enough time to spare. Thanks for this wonderful tutorial!

I have wondered for SO LONG how to get that effect of pen tool/erase...I don't know why, but for some reason I was convinced it was paintbrush/selected area gradation...XDDD; Oh well~ Thank you so much!! I learned a lot from it!!
