A Blue Crowned Pigeon...pretty fancy head gear! And that eye...wow!

Blue Crowned Pigeon (Goura Cristata)
The world's largest pigeon lives on the gound during the day, eating fallen fruit from the forest trees where it roosts in Northern New Guinea.

(I got smart and took a picture of the signage at the zoo!)

love that startled expression! you say the biggest, how big is it? (sounds like a joke *>*) chicken size, or not that big? i am always amazed that people WANT pigeons to land on em?! they are beautyful flying in the air, but i wouldn't want em that up close and personal?! i also get worried when i see the parrots i think it is... all that i know is they have gnarly feet and beaks, sitting on TOP of their cages at pet stores... above head/eye level! maybe that's why i never saw hitchcock's "the birds" *.*

brill idea ruth, taking a pic of the sign... i am not doing well in the mem dept, but usually have cam with! yay you!

He was about the size of a chicken! Including the headgear I'd not be too keen on a pigeon landing on my head - arm maybe...we've got a little parakeet who sits on our shoulders - I do like that! He nuzzles our cheeks and skoots around under the hair on the back of our necks - it's fun.

yikes, i'd get shivers... but there is something sweet about keets.... have you seen ... i think you'd like her... she does great nature shots and lives in australia! so has some fireengine lories (or is that trucks *>*) flying about!

I loooooove lorikeets! They've got "hairy" tounges I first learned about them when I was really young, maybe 6th grade, they had them at the San Deigo Zoo and it was the first place you could feed them nectar...now lots of zoos do this...but they were soooo colorful and friendly and have a wonderful sound!

I think it would be awsome to see flocks of parakeets flying around in the wild! Austrailia and New Zealand have been on my places to go since 5th grade...maybe some day!

I just put a watch on redmatilda, you were right - wonderful!!!

hairy tongues?! oh gak i wish you hadn't told me that (think i'm feeling sensitive cuz a friend fed her red ball python a baby rat today... jesse and i love rats)?! actually i can see how it might be handy (tongue) ... just sounds funny.... i think i'm coming up to that time.... SENSITIVE about strange (aka every little *>*) things *>*

hairy as in sort of like velvet - to sop up nectar, I think!

wow... what a gorgeous birdie! i love pigeons, even the common city ones, as for me they always bring a bit of wildlife to the city. plus i love their little bit of irridescent shimmer (on the clean gray ones, at least).

such a great photo too - not just the usual straightforward animal shot

Thanks for your kind words and fave! I had fun trying for the unusual angles this particular day

I've always liked the regular ones, too...we have a group that hangout near my daughter's old school [link] [link] [link]

ooh! such pretty white ones!

i always wonder if they were white doves that were released for some celebration, and never made their way home. i'm not sure white pigeons occur in nature often. hmm...

kayaksailor In reply to zasu [2008-03-28 06:34:51 +0000 UTC]

I've wondered that too, especially since we've got a neighbor with racing pigons that occationally have a white or two in the exercise flights, but only seem to join the flying - they never go back into the coop!

zasu In reply to kayaksailor [2008-03-28 06:41:06 +0000 UTC]

funny... but your neighbor might actually know the history of the white ones - might be a special interest for him/her

kayaksailor In reply to pitbullsmiles [2008-03-22 19:36:56 +0000 UTC]

And that is the beauty of a wide open apperature (small number f-stop) the camera focused on the eye 'cuz that's where I had it "aimed" and the optics of the light and lens did the rest So the only credit I can take is using mostly manual controls...my Nikon doesn't do manual focus very well, my old film camera had a way of telling inside the viewfinder when you were focused but the digital is purely by view and with contacts and "aging" eyes...I rely on the auto focus mostly - though it has a challenge at times when you get toooo many layers...

I was really pleased with this shot so I'm glad that you like it, too!

The blurred leaves (?) in the foreground give impact to the sharpness of the picture

It's a Blue Crowned according to the posted sign - I took it at the small but good zoo in Santa Barbara California...glad you like it!

Naut-Orthae In reply to kayaksailor [2008-03-20 05:52:21 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I have pigeons actually.. Nothing special, a pair of white Homing Pigeons, Valencian Figurita and a Domestic Show Flight..
But I've always liked the Crowned varieties.
Oh very fun. I like California - to visit. :3

I've got friends with homing pigeons...they're really sweet!

Can you imagine seeing a large group of these wandering around the forest? They're about 18" tall!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Naut-Orthae In reply to kayaksailor [2008-03-24 21:37:42 +0000 UTC]

I know - it'd be so awesome!
I actually at first didn't realize the crowned/crested varieties were endangered and attempted to find a pair I could purchase and then proceed to bring to fair - then of course I discovered why there were /none/ whatsoever for sale.
Hah.
These are ultimately the prettiest I have seen in a while as far as coloring goes - but the Jacobin pigeons are rather striking as well.
I should go to their homeland and stakeout an area to watch fo rthem. It'd be cool.
