Description One of the resident bucks letting me know they're still around...you can see how dry things are around here in Northern California  the deer are trimming the lower oak leaves and digging up acorns.  Hope the El Nino that is forecast for this winter gets an early start!

Indeed!  We've had three handsome buck hanging around lately, which is unusual - normally we've got the mamas and their babies!

We had a buck and doe browsing the egde of our meadow 2 nights ago.  Maybe mother + son, maybe brother + sister.

My photos did not come out very well.    Poor lighting, too much cam motion.

we often see little yearling buck with their single prong antlers with mom and the younger sibling - usually in fall and winter...once they get the heavehoe from mom they join up in bachelor bunches it is fun seeing a group of big boys with their full antlers!  Startled two this afternoon who were sitting in the shade by my deck - it is really and dry here right now and I keep a small pond full of water for them...

Excellent!

Good on you, providing for your wild neighbors.
We also have a pond, but we have been fortunate not to have drought for many years.

tell me where you are - I could use a year or two without fire fear and this year the added "will we have enough water" concerns...

ahhhh... might visit but no living there...I'm a weather wimp - winter is barely 32 here - snow happens one or twice a winter and doesn't stick.

Chances of real rain here are very slim until October or November - hope they can survive on dry grass and oak leaves...but this is typical summer here!

When we see the lush meadows with grazing horses
it makes the struggle of your local wildlife so much
harder to comprehend - too bad those rich resources
can't be more evenly disbursed - but I suppose it's the
same with all rich resources not being shared evenly -
a reality we all need to deal with in one way or another

A friend up in Wyoming just posted some photos of their local elk (quite a few actually) hanging out in the large irrigation sprinklers - such a funny sight!  www.facebook.com/MontanaFWP.R2… hope you can get this link...

The large ranch behind us has land up in the mountains where they move most of their cattle in the summer...

Hi Ruth, Yeah you can tell they are having a tough time finding enough food. You can see this one's ribs, and at this time of the year they should be putting on weight. Hope you all get some rain soon..or a lot of these animals won't make it through the winter season.

Here in CA the state of the grass is normal for the summer - at least at our elevation - once the rains start in late Oct (if they do) things green up and we don't get snow so they'll get to fatten up then...up where the snow is bad there is still green grass...but this guy does look skinny

Sorry to say, the El-Nino is looking to be dead for this year kajm.deviantart.com/journal/Gl…

I asked a question or two at the site of the article.... quite a few of the commenters there are scientists, and some of them, climate scientists. One told me it looks to him like there might be a mild El-Nino come early spring next year- but he expects it to be followed by a La Nina, which is definitely Not what your area needs.

Nooooo!  But I do know this is part of the pattern for CA - southern CA is really supposed to be a desert...I'm in Northern CA now and I finally understand my husband's "leave us our water" mentality, lol, (I met him up here at college and moved him back down south for 25 years, moved back up six years ago)  It is hard to watch "our" lakes empty and towns run out of water because of promised water being sent to the south (I somehow missed the invasive species debate, only knowing about the 'delta smelt') heard recently that the acre feet promised is like 400 times more than our average rainfall!! -sheesh-

We've had three nice buck kayaksailor.deviantart.com/gal… hanging around this summer - in the past we've been the nursery with all the mamas bringing their babies but due to issues with some neighbors (still) we've put up a bunch of bamboo privacy fences which, I think, makes it harder for the little ones to pass by as close...we've got water out for them all too and the buck may be staking their claim to it.   No chance of rain, or substantial amounts, until November probably.  Already lots of fires around here  Over the weekend sounded like every traffic accident resulted in a brush fire!

Sorry to hear about your continuing problem with the neighbors.   It's been dry in California for quite a few years in a row now, hasn't it?  I actually caught a few min of the local news here last night and saw there are quite a few fires out and about.  It's that time of year.

kayaksailor In reply to La-Vita-a-Bella [2014-07-08 21:49:50 +0000 UTC]

Yes it is a continuing drought - not sure how may years as the number changes depending on who is 'quoting', lol.  And yeah, it is 'that time of year' but we really never had a break from it with only really getting any rain in February and March...we're on a well and while we're not experiencing any problems yet, my husband is nervous as the creek down at the bottom of the valley below us is dry already...  don't think we could get onto the local township water supply as they're low too ...

La-Vita-a-Bella In reply to kayaksailor [2014-07-08 21:55:03 +0000 UTC]

That's a scary thought....running out of water.    We didn't get snow up here until Feb or Mar, which was unusual for us as many times we get it in late October.  I hope this winter is better, but that it doesn't go overboard.  Too many extremes lately!

I'm sure they are!  Cait had a pan of succulent "starts" on the window box outside the deer fence (a tiny bit cooler there) and they were gone this morning!!!  She was NOT happy   The roses that are close to the fence are being pruned too

These were on the window shelf next to the garden fence (by the white rose) so I'm not surprised by one being there - they nibble on whatever plant is there too...what go me was I had two beautiful pots of sweet williams pruned to stems and those pots were up ON the porch!!!  and about halfway down - not right next to the stairs  The pots got moved to the fenced garden and grew back so far no body has nibbled on my lemon tree  don't really want to move it...
