Indeed! We've had three handsome buck hanging around lately, which is unusual - normally we've got the mamas and their babies!

Chances of real rain here are very slim until October or November - hope they can survive on dry grass and oak leaves...but this is typical summer here!

When we see the lush meadows with grazing horses
it makes the struggle of your local wildlife so much
harder to comprehend - too bad those rich resources
can't be more evenly disbursed - but I suppose it's the
same with all rich resources not being shared evenly -
a reality we all need to deal with in one way or another

A friend up in Wyoming just posted some photos of their local elk (quite a few actually) hanging out in the large irrigation sprinklers - such a funny sight! www.facebook.com/MontanaFWP.R2… hope you can get this link...
The large ranch behind us has land up in the mountains where they move most of their cattle in the summer...

Hi Ruth, Yeah you can tell they are having a tough time finding enough food. You can see this one's ribs, and at this time of the year they should be putting on weight. Hope you all get some rain soon..or a lot of these animals won't make it through the winter season.

Sorry to say, the El-Nino is looking to be dead for this year kajm.deviantart.com/journal/Gl…
I asked a question or two at the site of the article.... quite a few of the commenters there are scientists, and some of them, climate scientists. One told me it looks to him like there might be a mild El-Nino come early spring next year- but he expects it to be followed by a La Nina, which is definitely Not what your area needs.

Nooooo! But I do know this is part of the pattern for CA - southern CA is really supposed to be a desert...I'm in Northern CA now and I finally understand my husband's "leave us our water" mentality, lol, (I met him up here at college and moved him back down south for 25 years, moved back up six years ago) It is hard to watch "our" lakes empty and towns run out of water because of promised water being sent to the south (I somehow missed the invasive species debate, only knowing about the 'delta smelt') heard recently that the acre feet promised is like 400 times more than our average rainfall!! -sheesh-

I'm sure they are! Cait had a pan of succulent "starts" on the window box outside the deer fence (a tiny bit cooler there) and they were gone this morning!!! She was NOT happy The roses that are close to the fence are being pruned too
